Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe received backlash after calling Puerto Rico ‘a floating island of garbage’ at Trump’s rally in New York City
Meredith Clark
Jon Stewart has admitted he finds Tony Hinchcliffe “very funny” following the comedian’s widely criticized remarks at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally.
On Monday (October 28), the Daily Show host dedicated his opening monologue to discussing the Republican presidential nominee’s rally in New York City on Sunday evening, which has since been condemned by celebrities and politicians alike for the many racist and vulgar remarks made by speakers at the event
Among the speakers at the rally, which included Tucker Carlson and David Rem, Hinchcliffe perhaps received the biggest pushback after calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean,” as well as other offensive comments aimed at Jewish and Black Americans.

(2,584 posts)My feeling is that he's really lost a step - like he's reading the prompts and the act seems so forced.
He's segued into a much better advocate (e.g., 9/11 first responders health) than doing teevee

(1,818 posts)It felt off and he was profoundly unfunny -- like I didn't laugh at all, which I was surprised about.
Jon also seems to be turning into a human contortionist before our very eyes as he attempts to 'both sides' any and everything. That show is borderline unwatchable these days.

(18,131 posts)What he said was that he thought Hinchcliffe was a funny comic at roasts and what did Trumps people expect from a comic who is known for saying outrageous shit at roasts!?
It's a subtle distinction but the people jumping to shit on Stewart are too quick to judge a comedian on a comedy show who was making a bigger point. The point was this: the Trump people should have known he'd be outrageous.

(2,530 posts)And that shows you their judgment of bringing an obviously vulgar comedian to a political rally.

(8,624 posts)It reminds me about hearing the comedian's original material had him calling Harris "the 'c' word" in his routine, but campaign organizers made them strike that one from the teleprompter. They thought it went too far. The damning part that isn't stated is that they were OK with the bits that caused the uproar.

(10,506 posts)THEY knew what the racist asshole, I mean "roast comedian," was going to say and clearly approved it. Trump can't claim ignorance either because he hired them, therefore, they speak for him. They are him.
So I don't give a shit what "kind" of comedian he is to other comedians. In the real world he's a racist fuck who was brought in to say vile racist doggerel for a cheap laugh and to boost up ugly stereotypes. Fuck Hinchcliffe and those who defend him.

(1,983 posts)A bunch of people in this thread have already concluded, falsely, that Stewart specifically liked the racist jokes in this rally, and not the jokes he's told at other roasts.
I wish people actually spent some time looking into things before getting so angry, but that's life, I guess.

(16,456 posts)Part of the biggest problem is that NONE OF THIS TRUMP SHIT IS FUCKING FUNNY
This isn't Chevy Chase lampooning Gerald Ford's clumsiness, or Jon Lovitz lampooning Michael Dukakis in a battle helmet, or any of the other political satire prior to 2015.
See John, neither of those candidates for president threatened to burn down our country and violently seize power through a FUCKING coup.
Jon once went on Crossfire and chastised the hosts for failing to meet the "seriousness" of their work.
Someone needs to tell Jon that there is nothing funny about fascism.
Jon can't be biased. He must portray "both sides" as equally funny.

(1,429 posts)I couldn’t stand Don Rickles and remember guys sitting around laughing at him. He wasn’t funny. I remember them saying, “You don’t get it.” Yeah I got it. It was not funny and hey, Jon Stewart, get off your high horse. Every joke that dickwad tells is not funny and don’t mansplain to us that it is.0

(1,767 posts)It might have been Jon's first show when it came back, I can't remember, but I'll never forget Jon Stewart talking about Biden and Trump as both being "old guys" and that America will be "just fine" no matter who ended up as President. He basically mocked everyone who was worried and was acting if everyone was behaving hysterically. Talk about privilege!
Jon Stewart got a lot of blowback from that first episode and I knew his second episode would be dedicated to him b*tching about those who criticized him. Sure enough, that's all that he did. He never acknowledged he might have very well have been out of touch due to his insulation from so many issues people are terrified about.
(NOTE: I didn't watch the episode that this post is about, but I did read it was taken out of context. My reply is that I just don't find Jon Stewart funny anymore, outside of anything he might have said recently)

(1,211 posts)He liked the routine that presented stereotypes as valid and the material that brought up the old wounds of slavery, in my view, in order to use that past circumstance to throw shade. The 3rd joke about "bruises"? went over my head, but I intuitively believe it was the worst.
He liked those types of jokes and held no disgust about the MSG Puerto Rico joke.
