(3,150 posts)They have no concept of how this affects girls, young women and women of all ages. None of us are too old to be disrespected. It needs to..stop. TFG has legitimized this evil attack that will not go away when he does!

(113,131 posts)Follow the rules. You can be a nurse, teacher or secretary age the only good jobs for girls, and only for a year or two until they get married. Wife is the only acceptable path for girls. Girls who don't get married have something wrong with them. Boys like to use girls who kiss them but they don't marry them. Don't be good in school, boys don't like that. Smile. Never raise your voice. Be sweet. Alsways make sure your makeup is fresh and no matter what you've been doing, always look your best. Never sweat.
The list went on and on and on and on. No wonder we turned to drugs and then broke every single one of those fucking rules as soon as we got away from Mom & Dad.
That girl in the video won't have it easy, but she won't have it as hard as we did. She's welcome.

(1,231 posts)It was an absolutely shitty era to be a female, and these fascists want to return to that terrible era. I was born in the middle of the baby boom, 1955, but early marriages and shotgun marriages were still very common fifty-plus years ago, when I graduated from high school. In fact, almost all the women I graduated with married by age 25. In the end, I was the lone holdout of the straight women in that graduating class who didn't bother with marriage at all. It hasn't been easy financially, but I have the peace of mind of not putting up with the life my mother and sisters had.

I found the perfect life they laid out for me to be dismal beyond words.

(12,205 posts)I think they were glad to be rid of the responsibility and not pay for college, they never encouraged that.
I ended up with high school only and 2 kids in my early 20's. I went to a business school at 29 so I could at least work as a bookkeeper which I did for many years.
I told my girls they could be and do anything and one has a masters degree in Accounting and is a CPA and one runs a large car dealership with 300 employees under her.

(3,150 posts)If she gets raped she may have to give birth to a baby to her attackers baby. She may die at any time in many states should she get pregnant and have complications that doctors will not touch leading to death. That is the biggest living hell that I can imagine. My daughter who is in her thirties says that she will not live in a country that does not have birth control. These are the things young women and girls are dealing with today. Plans need to be fluid enough to leave the country.

So I went to law school anyway.

(290 posts)I'm a nearly 59 year old male. That broke me down to tears that I'm still shedding as I type this. I want to ask how we have fallen this far, but shame tells me that the women in this world haven't fallen this far, they have risen this far because they have fought and clawed their way UP to this point. Ladies, you have done it without enough support from me and my kind. NO MORE. Take the reins ladies, you've been the glue that makes this world work from the start, now go lead us forward. You have earned your place at the table. You have earned the right to be heard. You have earned the right to lead. We will all benefit from your wisdom.

(11,529 posts)In a very concentrated way this sums up the experience women can so easily identify with while at the same time tapping the voices of powerful women that have and will continue to inspire other women and those on the cusp of womanhood to lead their best lives with self-respect and belief in their own potential.
Well done and brava!

(11,929 posts)My mom said a lot of dumb shit to me that has messed me up beyond words, so that Im an angsty Xennial. But, given that she had to get married and pump out kids before she could live her life (shes a lesbian
definitely didnt want to marry or have kids), she always said I could be whatever I wanted to be. So Im about to embark on my second PhD after having a midlife career crisis and moving abroad. Life a life that makes you happy was the best advice she gave me.
Not sure she wanted me to move to another continent but thats another matter haha

(15,584 posts)My mother was lovely and said the same thing to me.
I have been very lucky in both my parents.
They both supported me through every downturn and I have had many in the last decade. They have always believed me wrt encounters with creepy men etc.
My mom told me to do what makes me happy..she always supported my persevering with science in spite of how hopeless it often looks..
The only thing she did wrong was leaving me too soon. I still miss her every day..
