GOP plot to keep married women "trapped"

"I am scared every day": Experts say GOP men targeting no-fault divorce to keep women "trapped"
As worries grow after Dobbs, experts fear restricting no-fault divorce could be a death sentence for some women

(Salon) Raquell Barton was knee-deep in her doctorate program at the University of Memphis when her husband dropped a bomb on her: he wanted a divorce.

....(snip)....

He wanted out. She didn't. Despite her protests, the pair legally separated in 2018. After six months of separation, Barton's husband still hadn't filed for divorce even though he'd started seeing someone new. Fed up, she felt she had to take the initiative. The divorce was finalized in 2019.

Her divorce was as no-fault as divorces come, she said, even if it wasn't what she wanted.

"I went into [marriage] hoping that I was gonna have that Happily Ever After fairy tale, but sometimes it just doesn't happen," said Barton, now a certified divorce coach helping other women who didn't want their marriages to end in Arkansas, Texas, Tennesee and Oklahoma. "It's not that I don't believe in the sanctity of marriage, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. You just have to let people go."

....(snip)....

Though still only emerging from the fringes, the burgeoning movement against no-fault divorce has gained something of a foothold in a handful of ultraconservative states, including Texas and Oklahoma. The effort also has supporters up to the highest levels of government, from state Republican party platforms and state proposals to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance. ................(more)

The MAGAT movement is all about control. MAGAT men want control over women. MAGAT white people want control over people of color. Fundamentalists of all religions want control over everybody who isn't in their specific sect.

If you look at the demographics of MAGAT: mostly white Christians with some conservative fundamentalists from other religions, mostly male with some wives who go along with their husbands - it's very clear what they want.

They're freaked out and terrified that women have autonomy; can get educations and jobs that allow them to be self-sufficient and unmarried if they choose, and equal partners in their marriages if they choose to marry; can choose whether to have children or not; don't feel frightened by religious coercive control but can choose to join churches or not; can choose to be gay, straight, or any combination; can even choose to be male, female, or any identity. NOT dependent on men or churches. Independent and able to live their own lives.

Ditto for people of color. All those Black professional women running around spending their own money and living their lives instead of doing laundry for rich people! All those Latino immigrants getting educations and professional jobs instead of mowing lawns!

It's a complete freak out by people who are scared, deeply insecure, and basically really weird.

You are correct in all you've written.

And they want to control everyone else's thoughts and behaviors. Tell everyone to worship their old man on a cloud "god."

I've noticed how angry they get when Kamala buys a French cooking pot or wears a gold necklace. We point out that the Trumps worship materialism but that's not the point. To the MAGATs it's right and good that a white man of Germanic descent should have wealth and buy his wife luxury items. But how dare "that woman" buy herself things!

It's just hopeless to reason with MAGATs because they want something we are unwilling to give. Our autonomy.

It is important to note that the the fascists masquerading as "Christians" always rely on Old Testament scripture to justify their misogynistic, racist and homophobic views. (Plot spoiler: Jesus does not appear in the Old Testament.) They steer clear of the things that were actually said by the person they claim to follow.

One of the biggest drivers of this pro-patriarchy backlash is the fact more and more women are refusing to marry at all, let alone have children.

Single women are a far bigger threat to patriarchy.

The GOP is talking out of its collective ass, as usual. The Christian reconstructionists figure once they can get control of the federal government, they can just issue edicts without any legislative approval.

A bunch of braindead fools.

Now it's moving toward marital slavery? The next thing these people will want is to return to financial slavery, where a man has to co-sign for a woman to get a loan, or a credit card.
I can't imagine how we could let women be slowly striped of their rights, and return them to the powerlessness of the 1950's.
We men have to stand up, not just for our wives and children, but for all women.
As Kamala says, when we fight, we win.
This election is where we draw the line, and stop this anti-women "garbage" once and for all.
Freedom is not just a word, or an idea. It's a way of life.

And am still very close to my ex. We make better friends than we made a couple.

I am a cheerfully divorced woman as is he a cheerfully divorced man. Talk about the GOP basically wanting to live in the public’s bedroom .

So let me get this. The GOP doesn’t want environmental or labor regulations or safety nets i.e. nothing that protects humans (or other animals) or the environment. But you do have these creeps permanently in your bedroom?

Small govt libertarianism is not something I have much respect for, but this is even worse..the govt will not do anything worth doing (EPA, DOE, SS etc must go) and instead the main role of govt is being Creep Supreme. Wtf?

Boy meets girl. They move in together. They marry. They have three kids.

Wife decides married life is boring and so is her husband. She moves out and takes the kids.

She moves in with a guy who's an alcoholic. Kids sleep on the floor.

Husband meets another woman and moves in with her.

Wife files for child support because she can't keep a job.

While still legally married, they lead two parallel lives.

Sure, they could divorce on adultery, but they're fine with this arrangement.
