https://www.npr.org/2024/11/03/nx-s1-5159978/republicans-for-harris-women-voters-secret-votes-quiet-voters-2024-election-trumpIn political ads and campaign speeches, supporters of Vice President Harris have a message for Republican women: Your vote is private, and no one will know if you secretly vote for Harris.
No one gets to know how you're going to vote, Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin said last week during a campaign stop in Michigan. No one gets to check it. It's not available online. Right? Your vote is your choice. You don't have to tell anyone. Slotkin, whos running for Senate, was campaigning with former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, whos also crossed the aisle to endorse Harris.
Their message is aimed at conservative-leaning women like T, whom were calling by her first initial. T, who is in her 60s and lives in Wisconsin, asked for anonymity to discuss how living in a politically divided household is affecting her marriage of more than 40 years.
Hes frustrated with me that I wont listen to him plead his case. I cant and I wont, she explained.
T says she mailed her absentee ballot from another family members home to avoid a confrontation with her husband over her support for Harris.
Its not that he would ever stop me or anything, its just I just cant deal with that animosity, she said with an audible sigh.

"In the first of many interviews, Mitchell related how in the week following the Watergate burglary, she had been held captive in that California hotel and it was King who had pulled the phone cord from the wall.[18][20] After several attempts to escape from the balcony, she was physically accosted by five men and was left needing stitches.[21][22][20] Herbert W. Kalmbach, Nixon's personal lawyer, was summoned to the hotel and he decided to call for a doctor to inject her with a tranquilizer.[16][20] The incident left her fearing for her life.[23]
Her story is sad in my opinion

But hey, aren't MAGAs the ones who constantly make lots of noise about how MEN and WOMEN are completely DIFFERENT?

(19,207 posts)Even women are finally waking up to it!
I kept opining that since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, they are seeing, hearing, and reading the stories coming from other women who are experiencing horrible situations all for the cause of "protecting the unborn" when the unborn are part of the reason women are dying and being denied care, that women would rise up and scream "NO MORE!" .
Even Conservative women have daughters and Granddaughters who just might be one of those stories we all read about and shudder at the thought of such a tragedy happening to them.

(38,647 posts)We should have forgotten all this by now.
Also, they weren't counting on repub women revolting. I think those women themselves, didn't get what they thought they'd get with the reversal of Roe. I'm pissed they couldn't logically see what anti-abortion laws would lead to but I'm grateful they seem to finally be waking up.

(4,728 posts)That's why they did it so early in the cycle. But they don't realize the deep fear and anxiety that women can feel when they lose control of their very body. It won't go away.

(18,989 posts)After all the years Roe had been in effect, they finally saw a chance to overturn it, and I think they got so excited that they didn't stop to consider all of the ramifications.
I really do think the strong negative reaction to the Dobbs decision took them by surprise, as obvious as it was to the rest of us. The six are all evidently "pro-lifers," and sometimes people like that are so sure that their position is the only morally "right" one that they close their eyes and ears to the fact that many, nany people do not share that view.
I think they were so overconfident and so overly pleased with themselves about getting to be the ones to do this thing that they knew was going to be historic that it never occurred to them that it was also going to be historically unpopular. What's that old saying? Oh yeah - "Pride goeth before a fall."

(4,252 posts)I think they just got too goal-oriented at the expense of process, and simply ignored or rationalized anything that didn't validate the plan; the GOP simply went a bridge too far on this one and never thought about their flanks as they moved forward.

(50,818 posts)It happens in right wing families too. I know someone who is an old school republican but his wife is a MAGAt. He actually voted for Hillary in 2016 but didn't tell her. She still believes in his bullshit - although she hasn't been as vocal about it lately.t has been a tough decade for him.

(95,459 posts)Not every woman who disagrees w hubby is abused.
In the past Ive known several women in long lasting marriages who quietly register Dem or Independent, and just try to maintain a boundary regarding politics at home. They may roll their eyes with girlfriends leave the room when the TV goes on make placating noises. But theyre fine. Hubby has an annoying habit, like belching.
Marriages have lots of compromises.
Now, a partner who goes full MAGA is actually dangerous, but I am speaking here of normal people.
