Fun fact: This is the longest period in US history where a candidate for President hasn't won by double digits

It's been 40 years since it happened, when Reagan beat Mondale by 18.2%. Why doesn't it happen anymore? Will it ever happen again?

The US goes through periods of polarization and depolarization. I think we're just past the point of maximum polarization and are beginning to shift in the other direction.

The popular vote is nice but doesn't decide who won.

It probably won't happen again without a seismic shift in the political landscape. As long as greed, power, and bigotry are the purview of half the country, the status quo will remain.

Clinton: 49.2%
Dole: 40.7%
Perot: 8.4%

Not sure who Perot took more votes away from.
