Other than the obvious fake polls, the major pollsters were actually trying to get good numbers. Some might have fallen into "herding" behavior, but they weren't trying to do anything nefarious even if that happened, and if there was any error caused by herding, it was small.
They weren't selling number that clients asked them to provide.
The news services weren't requesting tight numbers to boost ratings.
The people on the news telling us it was a tight race weren't just saying that to boost ratings.
This race was, and still is, just as fucking close as we were being told. The polls, for all their flaws, pretty much painted the picture we're seeing right now.

(16,082 posts)there were several cases in the past couple of years where polls severely underestimated support for pro-choice ballot measures. So I think it was fair for people to wonder whether polls were capturing the true opinion of the nation.

(790 posts)The polls were not the right stuff to distrust.
I know where my distrust lies.
It's obvious at this point.

(790 posts)A lot of DUers were absolutely certain the polls were way off and hiding some BIG advantage for Harris.
Hell, I myself thought Harris was doing better than the polls. Not definitely sure of that, but I thought it possible.
Even then, however, I thought if the polls were off it would be honest errors in how pollsters modeled the electorate, not the conspiratorial crap so many people here were spewing.
Anytime anyone posts a poll, you can count on a dependable chorus of "Ignore the polls!", "Bullshit!", "They just want ratings!", "They're trying to demoralize us and suppress turnout!".
