Because, I've seen the path centering onto this very point for pretty much the last three decades. This country has been warned over and over again about this slow motion train wreck and it's been oblivious to the outcome.
The United States of America was supposed to be established as a constitutional republic, but over the last 237 years of its existence, thanks to a Republican Party which has mutated into a cult of personality, it has morphed into an empire that's fully invested white supremacy, patriarchy and genocide. It''s failure to resolve those original sins had clearly left it vulnerable to creeping authoritarianism. Our courts have established an uncontrollable police state, which now looks to be solidified and focused on the destruction of reproductive rights, civil and human rights and the rule of law. Even worse, the country is about to be led once again to its darkest recesses by a man who is proven to be unfit to hold public office. Corporations and billionaires have enough wealth and power to render civic engagement moot.
The government, which was established in the name of the people will soon be openly hostile to the people. Our rights and privileges as ordinary citizens will be cast aside, for the benefit of a privileged, powerful few.
And yet, it looks to be more worse, because Trump, the eventual executor of this national devolution, will be nothing more than a temporary placeholder for Vance... Who is the real candidate behind the curtain. The Oligarchs' willing errand boy, itching to stab a sun-downing Trump in his back to take his place at the altar of power. As NBC called the election for Trump, recognize it for what it really is, and that's a prelude to a coup.
Not to say that there hasn't been resistance to all of this and there has. But now, the electorate has decided to turn a deaf ear to all of the warnings from all sides and facilitating a process of succumbing to irrational fears, uncontrollable anger and the appeal to white adjacency, finding that irresistibly desirable. Those poor, dumb bastards, they've doomed us all.
And of course, when the fecal matter eventually interfaces with the rotational air circulator, they'll all find someone else to blame besides the reprobates they've put in charge. Victim blaming will proliferate as our national pastime. The legacy media will celebrate in their ratings. The weak and powerless will suffer and the bread and circuses for the entertainment of the mob will abound.
Just to be clear, I'm NOT blaming the Democrats and our allies for what's about to happen. I'm placing to blame squarely on white America and its adjacency. Everybody was warned. Now it's time to account for the inevitable circumstances of our national folly. I'm not holding out any hope for these motherfuckers eventually learning their lesson.
SO, ALSO TO JUST MAKE IT PELLUCIDLY CLEAR... I'm totally expecting things to be exceedingly fucked up for the foreseeable future with skyrocketing prices, domestic upheaval, government malfeasance and unnecessary international crises. In order to preserve my own sanity and peace of mind, I'm refusing to give a fuck. I will no longer attempt to change minds. I'm eschewing any self-imposed obligation to refute or validate the delusions of right wing, white assholes. Because I expect them to be nothing but willfully ignorant to the consequences that they themselves have wrought.
Politics, which has been at the center of my interests for many years, will now take a distant second place to just about everything else. I'm still a functioning registered voter, but that's going to be just about it. This fucking country isn't worth more of my time than what it takes to cast a ballot.
If I'm disappointing any of you here, I sincerely apologize... It's just that I have nothing to give right now,
Be that as it may, let's gird our loins for the mess that's coming, shit happens, people.. If you can do something about it, I urge you to do that. However if you plan to recline as I am, I totally understand. Just be a witness to seeing what happens to ignorant assholes who get what they've asked for.
Saddle up, dudes, dudettes and everybody else in-between, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
(Being in the midst of history making itself is no picnic.)

(2,999 posts)Last night, when it became more and more clear where the results were heading, I thought I was strangely calm, but it was merely numbness setting in. Like the OP, I'm tuning it all out. There is nothing more I can do and I don't want to watch what comes next. I'm glad we don't live long in my family. I'd like to be here for my grandchildren, but my agency got squashed in this election and I will only become one more thing for them to worry about. Now is the time for me to catch up on my reading and attend those hobbies I've been neglecting for so long.

(2,528 posts)I don't see there being any voting. Or I guess one corrupt republican against another, no point in voting either way. He's not going to allow any inroads for a Democrat ever again.

don't post much but on DU all the time.
my wife and I really feal sorry for younger people that will live with this result (Trump/Rep.) for the rest of their lives with the policies coming up. I was raised by white republican parents and relatives, and they are who they are...............
My wife and I are at the age that we remember all the terrible things of the 60's that came to people wanting freedom. the younger generation now will have to face the same things...............

(2,171 posts)the mutherfuckingpiecesofshit who voted for him will suffer along with the rest of us - skyrocketing cost of living, equity companies buying up real estate keeping home prices out of reach, school funding drying up, jobs disappearing, tariffs killing us. Of course theyll blame Nancy Pelosi.

(51,237 posts)giving a shit and will forget any attempt at spreading facts to the dumber and lazier voters among us. Trump is going to do whatever the hell he wants, and he'll be abetted by the Congress and the Supreme Court. There are no guardrails. Basically, we're fucked.

Thank you for the phrase "white adjacency" and will be borrowing it.

Now is the last.

(24,343 posts)I can't watch tv this morning, seeing and hearing it just pisses me off so bad I can't take it and almost immediately turn off the tv. I didn't even get on DU until later, but glad I did.
I have chores to do and PT today, and aside from that think I will check out the dispensary, maybe take a trip there if I find something good for a decent price. Aside from that it's reading sci/fi-fantasy and streaming Continuum after dinner.
I HATE living in Nazi Amerixa where Eloon and demented orange Russian agent scheme to destroy liberal democracy worldwide and the working class/poor of America. I don't know how we will survive without Social Security, it's the vast majority of our income and my memory isn't good enough to be a working person anymore, sadly. Hubs is younger, was planning on retiring in Jan. Now he can't retire early because ACA will be gone and he doesn't qualify for Medicare until Aug. That is unless the fucking fascist raises the age before then - which he will certainly do at some point in time. Just hope it's not before the end of Aug or we are so fucked! Hubs job is getting worse and worse and HR is totally trump/nazis and refuse to staff up the area so everyone who is there has to work 10x harder.
FUCK, FUCK FUCK!!!!~

(32,138 posts)Solo at 73 I don't have the energy to leave the country. Prior to Covid, I thought about relocating to France or Spain or Portugal after my husband died in 2018. But didn't go look see because I didn't want to leave my senior dog for a 6 month trip to try it out.
So, looking ahead, dependent upon Social Security to make my mortgage payment, I have to consider what happens when that goes bellyup in 2033. We know nothing will happen to fix that looming problem in the next four years.
Already this am I'm looking at my budget for what I can cut in order to payoff my mortgage before 2033. I will NEVER order anything else from Amazon, that's for damn sure. No more travel. Reduce clothing and entertainment expense. No additional home improvement projects...and so on.
Time to hunker down.

(12,205 posts)that if he managed to win I was done with politics and news except for voting every 2 years.
I have high blood pressure and just hearing about anything he says or does would be too much.
The young are going to have to figure this out and fight.
I refuse to spend my retirement upset and scared everyday.
I believe in mindfulness and living in the present moment so I am not going to worry about the future just take it one moment at a time. This particular moment hurts so much.
The last 3 months filled me with hope I hadn't had in a long time. I just don't know where to go from here but to accept what I don't want to, that our country is going backwards.

(2,102 posts)This morning I roused myself from my couch of restlessness to take my dogs outside. After all, life goes on.
I walked outside with my pup to see that the sun had indeed risen. Then took a moment to inhale the scent of fallen leaves and the overnight rain. As I walked my pups I felt the leaves under my feet and felt the cool fall air on my face.
Life goes on. It has to. The grief and our feelings of disappointment and anger are real. It is important to feel them. But also to remember that the sun will rise and set every day like it always has. We have the choice right now to decide how we spend our present moments.

(2,528 posts)The felon and his sidekick (I think the sidekick will be 25th-ing the felon on January 7th) aren't coming in this house. Space in this house is free of politics, we will go on doing what we do just like always. In our 70's, we own the house and our cars and have some money in the bank. I refuse to change my life for those clowns. I observe very objectively how interesting it is to have been alive when America died. I'm glad that I got to grow up and live most of my life in a good country before it was killed. I feel deeply sorry for kids in their 20's and 30's who had so little time in a free country.

(2,435 posts)And make no mistake, the coming future will not just be hell for Democrats, it will be hell for most of the people who voted for it. Will it make any difference? Or is their hatred of "others" so strong that they won't care if their life is hell as long as those of the others is worse? If it wasn't obvious before, then by God I would hope it would be obvious now that half of this country is completely brainwashed. They truly do not believe in objective reality. Will the after effects of this finally snap people back to reality? Who knows? At this point it's hard to have any hope at all. I weep for our country and fear for the future of the planet.

(66,720 posts)As Rachel Maddow said "we will be going through some things". I am upset and thinking Russia and Elon were totally behind this all. VP Harris should not concede. Something not right, regarding all of this.
I, grieve for our country and the world.

(667 posts)Maybe it's just blind anger that allows me still to rage, rage against the dying of the light. I finally broke down and got my passport a year or two ago in case of a Trump reelection, but I don't think I can leave now. As an old white guy, I don't personally feel in danger from the fascist right, unless and until it gets to the point of them going after DU posters. I will, however, be encouraging my children, nieces, and nephews, almost all of them with children of their own, some of whom are gay, trans, and/or autistic, to look to another country for refuge. With the Xtian right in charge, all such persons will be in danger.

I'm only 2 years and change shy of 80, but I'm still working full-time. I keep close track of the malice and perfidy generated by those on the Dark Side, and I will work to expose it when and wherever possible.
The fighter in me is old, and my heavy bag in the basement is really dusty, but I'm not dead just yet. So when not if the lawless yahoos come for me, I will not go quietly. Read into that what you will.
