(67,917 posts)Garland, McConnell, Johnson, the entire GOP, etc.
Frank D. Lincoln
(894 posts)His was the original sin in this political tragedy.
He had the political sway to stop Trump immediately following J6 but he chose not to.
That's my point.
It all goes back to Mitch McConnell.
Irish_Dem
(67,917 posts)The GOP did not have to nominate Trump again. But did so.
The American people could have refused to vote for Trump. But did so.
The list goes on and on.
The loss of our democracy rests on no single person's shoulders.
It is a shared blame.
Frank D. Lincoln
(894 posts)I'll state this once more and then I'm done with this exchange.
I understand that there's shared blame. I've not stated that there isn't shared blame. I've made posts at DU several times before placing blame on several different people as you've done. But that's not the point of my OP that started this thread
My point is that it all started with Mitch McConnell.
That's my only point.
Now, feel free to reply and have the last word because I know you have a need to do so and that's fine. But I'll skip reading it.

(6,210 posts)We must resist with imagination, consistency, and purpose. Like they said in that tv show, “Winter is coming.”
I for one intend to resist for as long as I am able. I’m not going anywhere; I like this land. It’s my home. And, I don’t like fascism.

(25,710 posts)He has always sided with the oligarchs and the fascists.
Frank D. Lincoln
(894 posts)You seem to be dismissing McConnell's initial outrage at what Trump did when he incited J6. In that moment, McConnell was a conservative but not a fascist. Next, he saved Trump for purely partisan reasons. For years after that, McConnell and
Trump were estranged. But eventually, McConnell kissed Trump's ring, completing his transformation to fascism.

(77 posts)If this is really the end of democracy? If Trump can really ditch the constitution then why wouldn't Joe Biden beat him to the punch? If this is a one way street with no coming back I just don't understand why you would even transfer power to a dictator that would never transfer it in 4 more years after 2 terms?
Frank D. Lincoln
(894 posts)Biden and Harris have promised a smooth transfer of power to the (new) Trump administration.
Upon his inauguration, Trump will implement Project 2025 and end our democracy as we've known it.
But, as I've stated, this all goes back to Mitch McConnell.

(16,211 posts)he degraded the Senate, making it a pathetic shadow of what it should be. Since last night, he's probably drooling at the prospect of finishing the job and then abusing the corpse. He also owns 95% of the stink on the federal bench.

(5,971 posts)That McConnell’s tarnished legacy is recorded for posterity in every way possible. History must record who the players were in this tragedy. Not one of them should escape history’s tablet of shame. McConnell’s name can be at the top.
Grumpy Old Guy
(3,750 posts)He announced on day one of Obama's presidency that their only goal was to make him a one term president. After that they blocked everything, including their own bills. He definitely broke our government.

(20 posts)…the present GQP and this whole “end justifies the means attitude really came back to life with that asshole Newt Gingrich.
Each tear it got worse and worse and we end up what happened yesterday.
The whole goddamn crowd of them are guilty. McTurtle, Johnson, Kevin McCarthy and that’s only a few of the numerous guilty ones plus Robert’s and the RW Supremes acting as supporting players.
Last of course is then morons ( yes morons) who voted for them. I hope to hell you reap what you have sown you bastards.
