(3,780 posts)Which strikes me as precisely part of the issue you're describing.
Anyway, on that about which we cannot speak, we should remain silent.

(34,186 posts)I do understand that somevwere using the trans issue to attack all trans though
But the basic issue is spiraling through women's sports. Why can't progressives even acknowledge it?

(5,258 posts)It was an adult in their 50s, if I'm remembering that NPR story I heard, which has zero to do with young girls missing out on an opportunity to play or compete, but that didn't seem to matter. The point was made and the rubes were scared.

(48,184 posts)GOP capitalized on it.
In 2016, President Obama was pushing trans bathrooms. It didn't play well in the south in particular. I firmly believe HRC would have won if we had waited for 2017 for her to push it while in office.
So here we are in 2024 and the GOP grabbed a similar issue, same subject, and ran with it. Why should we be surprised? I know we only try to energize our base, and LGBTQ is part of our base and deserves equality as much as anyone, but it is not a winning issue for us at this time.
I suppose I'm not allowed to say that. But it's meant constructively as an observation and analysis.

(9,492 posts)A week before the election. They were talking about that Olympic athlete who was actually born a woman.

(34,186 posts)San Jose state has a trans woman. Hitting the ball harder than the women.
People see that with their eyes.. liberals are saying "wait for the science"

(103,061 posts)And it stemmed from the dark corners of the internet, like Infowars and 4chan. It should have been addressed but it wasn't. I would bet good money that the people who are so terrified of trans women competing in women's sports, couldn't give a flying fuck about women's sports. In fact I would bet they couldn't name one professional women's sports player. It's just an excuse to legislate hate against trans people.

(34,186 posts)Yes!!!
It certainly hasn't helped trans people to ignore.
Trump administration 2 will go hard anti trans

(2,493 posts)ads with Kamala in photos with Trangenders were pretty powerful too. They definitely know how to message.
I posted a remedy commercial for Kamala to run but almost got kicked off of here. I mentioned the ad saying repubs hate transgender, but what about this. then rotate through Guiliani, hawthorn, and jd vance dress up pics.
I was told to shut up.

(7,879 posts)In that I wish them the best and have empathy for them, but the trans in sports is something that needed addressing.
There are TRUE physiological differences between a male and female and there are reasons sports separate the two. It does not mean women are inferior, it just means men and women are different and trans people are different. You may have a transitioned women with all the physiological benefits of being a man. No wonder this issue turned out to be an albatross.
Still, I don't think that's a reason at all we lost. I still think it was a combo of economy propaganda, racial/misogynistic hangups and some people are just dumb.

(34,186 posts)Women wouldn't be able to walk upright while pregnant if they had big male shoulders..so definitely not superiority in either direction.

(878 posts)Not just with athletics, but also the bathroom debate and viral tweets/social media posts of trans people threatening cis people and wishing for violence against them. This shit obviously does not represent trans people as a whole, but people see these instances (whether the posts are even made by real trans people or not) and it scares them. Think of it like local news stations reporting on crime the stories capitalize on people's subconscious fears and biases.
Also
some people (including liberals) are taking note of the increase in kids who are identifying as transgender. Their fears may be secret or restricted to friendlier forums, but they exist. They feel like social media is confusing vulnerable kids.
Then there's the inflammatory discourse over whether certain dating preferences are discriminatory or not. That's a whole hot mess in and of itself in every direction.

(34,186 posts)Some commercial..showing the humanity of trans at least.
And don't duck the "what is a woman question?".

(455 posts)Now I'm not really hanging around Republicans so naturally it's where you're going to hear it from but there seems to be at least from my point of view a significant backlash against certain emphasis from the trans community from the rest of the LBG space.
The trans athlete issue would have been a simple layup for Harris to have a sister soja moment but she ran such a timid campaign.

(262 posts)No. You're not. And your own words in this thread show that
These are not the words of someone who cares about trans people. More the words of someone scapegoating them and saying things that are hurting an already wounded and terrified community
