General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI see so many posts calling the voters who didn't support Harris "stupid"
Calling them names may make you feel better, but do you think it helps win them over to our side? Keep in mind that some of those same voters undoubtedly supported Biden in 2020 and either switched to Trump, a third party, or stayed home.
I get the need to vent. But its not a long term strategy for success.

1) the majority get their news from the right wing echo chamber of lies. They are willfully ignorant and proud of it. How long will they believe the sky is green?
2) They believe he has been unfairly accused of crimes he did not commit.

(44,493 posts)The absolute defeatism on this thread is quite astonishing to me.
I'll say it again: voters are fickle. Obama got fewer votes in 2012 than 2008 and Clinton got fewer still, and then Biden got 81+ million in 2020. That had to include a lot of the voters people here are writing off as stupid, ignorant, evil, etc.
If that's the strategy folks think will result in voters coming back to us, it's a bad strategy. But I'm getting the feeling that a lot of posters have given up. I for one am not prepared to concede that we will never win an election again.

(64,109 posts)I work in the healthcare and medical research world. The president-elect has promised to turn healthcare over to RFK, Jr.. This is not a policy difference. This is literally burning things down. The FDA, which protects us from poison marketed as medicines flooding the market, in the hands of a man who doesn't believe in science. The NIH in the hands of a man who thinks vaccines should be outlawed.
The military in the hands of Trump, who has promised to abandon our allies, quit NATO, and turn the military on "the enemy within." A man who promises to be a dictator. A man who said that people "will never have to vote again."
This is not Reagan v Carter or even W v Gore. This is a man whose followers literally praise Hitler in charge of the United States, with Congress and the Supreme Court supporting him.

Fascism may seem an expedient way to get things done duthlessly and quickly. It may seem macho and manly. But it is like playing with a flame thrower. If the wind quickly changes direction you can suddenly end up with disfiguring third degree burns.
Trump's second term may finally teach them that Democracy may be slower but far less volatile and explosive than speed of light extreemism of Fascism.

(44,493 posts)I don't have time to post the data now, but will tonight or tomorrow morning. It essentially shows that 44% of this year's voters voted for Biden in 2020 and 43 percent voted for Trump in 2020 ( 2 percent had voted 3rd party and 10 percent of this year's voters didn't vote in 2020 ). Of the 2020 Biden voters, 94 stuck with Harris, but 6 percent switched to Trump this. And of the 2020 Trump voters, 96% stuck with Trump and 4 percent switched to Harris.
I'll translate all of that into actual numbers when I get a chance.

(44,493 posts)There was shifting. In addition, 10 percent of the voters this year didn't vote in 2020. Two percent had previously voted in an election prior to 2020 and eight percent were first time voters.

(1,012 posts)didn't change. Obviously not all the same people. People die, new voters register, but there was no surge in support/votes for Trump. R votes have been steady, climbing a little, over the past few general elections. It's the Democratic vote that has the anomaly with a huge surge in 2020 and those votes (numbers) did not move to the Trump column in this election.
Harris is still down 11 million votes from Biden in 2020. That is a huge number of votes! Where they hell did they go? Were they just Trump haters who registered, voted in 2020, and then lost interest, never to vote again? I have no idea but it should be analyzed by counties to see where vote totals rose in 2020 and then fell in 2024. I assume there are people who do that stuff and will be digging into it.

onenote
(44,493 posts)Biden's favorability tanked in 2021 and never really recovered. Harris was saddled by her association with the Biden administration and by other factors, such as misogyny and racism among a segment of the voters. But its not as if every woman that ran or every person of color that ran lost -- some even won in places where Harris lost.
As I noted above, Biden received 81+ million votes. Without doubt that included a number of voters that some people think we should simply give up on because they didn't support Harris. Obama won re-election, but he got fewer votes in 2012 than in 2008 and Clinton got fewer votes in 2016 than Obama and then Biden got a lot more votes than either Obama or Clinton. There is the "base" that reliably votes for one party no matter what. And then there are a bunch of voters -- independents or voters who nominally register with one party but don't vote with the party all the time -- sometimes they vote third party, sometimes they vote republican, sometimes they just don't vote at all.
There is an assumption that everyone that voted against Harris is evil or stupid. A large number are evil, no doubt. But a large number simply are low information voters who felt that things hadn't gone that swimmingly for them the past four years and voted for change. Many of these voters supported Biden in 2020 for the same reason -- they didn't like how things had gone the previous four years and decided to vote for change. Voters can be fickle and we need to recognize that fickleness and find a way to turn it back to our advantage not simply give up and hide under a rock thinking its going to magically get better. Here on DU, we're plugged in a 1000 percent more than the average voter. 150 million people voted. How many do you think regularly watch television news? Read newspapers? Get information from unbiased social media sources? There is large segment of voters that, for any number of reasons, are more focused on their daily lives than on politics. Wish it wasn't true but it is.
If we give up on all of them, what is the strategy going forward to win an election. That's the question I think needs to be addressed.

who incited people to try to overthrow the government.
There is no white-washing about that . It is who they are.
The view that "some of them supported Biden" is meaningless. The fact that election was extremely close that could have gone either way, doesn't mean there was strong support for him in the first place.
As for trying to "win" them over to "our side". If things go the way I suspect they will, trump and his thugs will do that job quite effectively as they find the world of trump isn't quite as "rosy" as they thought it would be. (172 posts)But they were told by RW media that all democrats think they are. I am not sure there is anything anyone could say that would change their minds. The tribalism has turned in to a cult. Trying to reason with someone in a cult is impossible. Until the fever breaks or they suffer enough to look around and realize they were duped, I don't know what strategy would be effective.

Distribute binkies? Offer lotteries for dates with Margot Robbie? Wipe their chins? Buy them new SUVs, or big bags of meth? Drop therapists out of airplanes over small Rust Belt towns? Pallets of cash, maybe?
Voting for a sociopathic convicted felon for president is stupid.
Believing his lies is stupid.
Voting to hurt people because it makes you feel good is sadistic and evil and stupid.
And sitting on your ass and not voting so the same sociopathic felon can burn the whole fucking thing down is stupid.

(94,503 posts)Civics was boooooring and hard. Foreign languages were unnecessary and hard.
Home schooling (textbooks courtesy of the religious right wing/ taught by stay at home Moms with no credentials required) should be supported with our tax money.
If your local school is falling to pieces, take our tax money to a charter school. And by the way charter schools, like private schools, are not required to teach your precious child if they are a problem in any way (and I do mean special needs) making public schools the place of last resort.
Did I mention Civics is boring?
Something I figured out in high school about 1964 from reading an actual book: stupidity is not inborn and is unrelated to IQ. It is something a person and a society have to work at to achieve. That, by the way, was not the message of the novel I was reading I simply worked it out for myself based on the behavior of one of the lead characters.
My feelings about my country at this moment: tremendous potential squandered. Stupid, stupid citizens. And we had to work at it to get here.

(42,443 posts)Not all of them are stupid, but some of them are. Some are malignant human beings. Some just go along to get along. What all of them have in common is that they are bigots

Of course, it's not like they're mutually exclusive, but hypothetically stupidity alone could be sufficient reason to vote for burning it all down.
Remember, stupidity in one or even most areas, is not an assertion of absolute stupidity in all -- one can believe and behave stupidly with respect to many topics yet have refined knowledge, competence, and aptitudes in others. Calling TSF voters "stupid" for their votes is not an insult -- it's far more the benefit of the doubt.

(57,402 posts)and why do we want to win over racist, misogynistic and white suppremacists? They've shown us who they are and as Maya Angelou advised us long ago, when people do that, believe them.
They've set the country on a path to fascism and we just have to ride it out and hope we haven't descended into a modern version of 1930s Germany.
A nation gets the leader it deserves, and apparently more than half of us chose a narcissistic, racist, misogynist and white supremacist pig.

I also think, though, that without Trump, Harris would have won. Trump has some kind of weird "charisma"- like a showman or carnival barker or whatever that no other Republican (or Democrat, even) has.

(1,424 posts)What these losers like or don't like, or how they feel. They are stupid, and you really can't fix it. America is full of idiots that continue to vote for people that mean them harm. This time, the harm and misery they voted for will affect all of us in unimaginable ways. If they can't see what tsf is after his four years in office, January 6th, and all the things he has said and done since then, they are not reachable.

My father is a Trump voter. So are my Aunts, my Uncles, my cousins, their kids. Are they dumb? Not exactly. They are certainly misinformed and prefer to believe lies. For instance, my Dad thinks Harris is a Communist.
If they know what Motherfucker is, what he plans to do, and they support that, then that's worse than stupid.
