This is awesome - we want to see more governors standing up to Trump's impending attacks on their residents 👇
To anyone who intends to come take away the freedom, and opportunity, and dignity of Illinoisans, I would remind you that a happy warrior is still a warrior. You come for my people, you come through me, Pritzker said.

(2,551 posts)...of a kind of "soft secession" by several states. It started with things like sanctuary cities, ignoring FDA scheduling of cannabis, the devolution of abortion law to the states, and other similar movements over the last 20 years or so. And the ties that bind were further stressed by the Trump regime's disastrous mismanagement of Covid. Of course, the courts weighed in long ago on the question of "hard" secession (not possible; the Union is a one-way street), but I really wonder what the country is going to look like in another 20 years. The 2024 election will definitely be seen as a major inflection point.

(37,246 posts)To victors always belong the spoils.
The South couldnt back it with military victory, thats why they are still in the Union.
We seceded from the British Empire and backed it with military force. Therefore we became an independent nation.

(2,551 posts)IANAL, but I know that the lawyers and scholars say it's a one-way street. States can't vote to leave or litigate their way out of the Union.
As for violent secession, we fought a war that resulted in more than 600,000 deaths as a direct result of the conflict, with secondary casualties adding to a grand total of more than 1,000,000 deaths. The level of savagery in that war even today is totally incomprehensible (see the "Battle of the Bloody Angle", for just one example). I can't imagine what Civil War 2.0, fought with modern weapons, would even look like.
