(465 posts)My father, sister and two brothers are trump supporters. I have not spoken to them since my father's funeral two years ago. I didn't speak to my dad after my mom's funeral in 2017. I tolerated him before my mom died. After her death he moved in with my Trumper sister. One evening during my mom's short illness, he told me how worthless I was and my children were losers. He stated I tried "shove my daughter lifestyle down his throat and I was a terrible mother for not raising my kids in the church" that is a direct quote. I wasn't informed of when or where my mom's funeral was. Joke was on them I was raised in the church and knew most funeral masses are held on Saturday and had no trouble finding the information I needed. The only reason I attended my father's funeral was for my middle child, he needed me to drive. When my son had finished his first cancer treatment in 2016, his grandfather had let us stay at his home for two weeks after his release from the hospital in Los Angeles. We both lived in other states and he had to go back to hospital in two weeks.
I have no need for those whose values are so different from mine. Being family isn't enough, especially since I know how they really feel about me and my daughter.

(17,917 posts)Luckily, my youngest son's school play is that weekend (the one before Thanksgiving), so we can not attend.
Of course, previously, I told him I would not be attending if the election went the wrong way. Room full of MAGAts. Wealthy, privileged MAGAts.
I can not be around those people right now.

(528 posts)I even tagged my brother-in-laws and nephews pickups with Trump Lost LOL bumper stickers, unbeknownst to them. It took them two days before they discovered them! So, I fully expect a good ribbing. And yes, Ill be checking my bumper before I leave!

(189,215 posts)My brother (they dont get along) told me about a year ago that he said the Pence saved the country. The old man was a salesman. An honest one. He prided himself on it. He sees Trump for the BS artist he is.

I love the man to death but theres no talking politics with him.

(2,561 posts)and friends are a mixed bag, more Republican than anything else, just like everyone else around here.
But I can't think of a single person in that group who would stoop to putting politics above family and friends. We don't roll that way.
Everyone is also always intelligent and civil enough to not make it a topic at gatherings. We're gather to enjoy one anothers company.
I hope you enjoy the same, sounds like you probably do.

(55,655 posts)In fact, she's thinking of cancelling her hosting of the event because of that. Her son is gay, and she logically sees a vote for Trump as a vote to threaten her son.
Her mother-in-law is a definite Trump voter, and we also think it's likely my brother's wife voted for Trump. She's ungodly stupid when it comes to politics.

(1,970 posts)Those people are deadly toxic poison, and what they just did is unforgivable. It's permanent and irreversible damage. This is much more than just a difference of views - it's a toxic cult. Family ties must be severed and never mended. If you were to keep them in your life it only means more misery for you. Cut them out and you will be far happier.

(117 posts)One can at least choose friends. You're stuck with family, be they morons, murderers or magats. Fuck 'em. They've been cut off.

(1,970 posts)The breakup of the family happened after our mother died, and there was a bitter dispute over the estate. That's the main reason why we don't communicate, but I choose not to anyway because a few of them are MAGA or MAGA-leaning and I wouldn't want to be around them anyway. It is far better to be separated completely than endure the pain of being around them.

(2,562 posts)I told my wife that I would be conspicously absent from family gatherings for the foreseeable future. It wouldn't be so bad, but they
hid the fact they were voting for him while affecting sympathy for my views. I was never anything but kind to them. I guess they secretly loathe me.

(18,912 posts)The upside is weve all had a no politics rules since 2016 and I dont think anyone wants to deal with the smoke I would bring if they brought it up. Theyve seen and more importantly heard, my critiques of W and the Iraq war on thanksgivings past and it was not a pleasant experience.

I'd skip it but my FIL is dying if cancer so this will be his last one.
Trans niece will likely be on pins and needles waiting for her dead name to come back again. It took over four years to get Grandma to stop using the dead name. It will likely come back.
Hoping to get job out if country soon. MIL can die bitter and alone with her racism when two of her three daughters leave the country never to come back

(11,078 posts)Pun intended. While I will have time off work, I will be doing decluttering and yard work, not Thanksgiving.
I had a bible one of them gave me when my mother died - not an heirloom but a grocery store bible. I tossed it in the bin last week.
I dont do that shit - Gawd, MAGA, and that whole mess.
The idiots are absolutely OBLIVIOUS to what theyve done: ruined THEIR LIVES AND MINE.
Fuck em.
But hey at least the illegals will get deported and stop taking our social security & Medicare (they dont do that - but Trump, MAGA and Elon Musk will absolute take it - and now I cant retire). And some women they dont even know wont be having an abortion somewhere that they dont think she should get. And inflation will be caused by Trump, not Biden, so THATS great eh?
Fucking morons. Racist, sexist, ignorant morons.
