General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsRarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?
After the results of this election, I along with George Bush, have to ask this question again. I see recriminations of every stripe on what democrats missed. But it is very difficult to communicate complex ideas and ask for critical thinking when the general populace has no knowledge of history or how the government works.
I do not think that now we will ever go back to teaching civics and actual history. I often think about those Schoolhouse Rock videos we used to watch as kids. I'm Just a Bill on Capitol Hill, Sufferin' for Suffrage. Wouldn't it be great if some of those liberal actor or musician donors would put some money in to revamping these? They could be distributed on social media, tiktok, instagram. I know I learned a lot from them and I can still sing some of those songs. The shot heard round the world was the start of the revolution.......
There has to be some way to reach people so they do not drown in ignorance and misinformation. But maybe it is too late.

These kids need to learn phonics, many of them can't read, they also need to learn civics.

and understand the basics of how government is organized, structured, and operates.
Im in my 50s and work in an office with tons of 20-30 year-olds. There is a woeful lack of knowledge of how government works. They are awesome with passion on many noble causes (i.e. LGBT, environmental, reproductive, etc.), though. They just dont understand, appreciate, or even really show interest in how government works.
The Electoral College is a great example of a widely misundertood topic. And Im not talking about whether it makes sense, its pros and cons, and whether we should still have it. Everyone should, at least, understand how it works and why the Founders put it in the Constitution.
Also, few have understanding of federalism, the branches of government, and checks and balances.
A better educated electorate on civics would help.
