General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI can't wait for all the articles chastising Retrumplicans for failing to "reach out" to Democratic voters.
Surely, the media will try to "understand" Democratic voters aspirations, political positions, feelings and dreams for their children.
I look forward to the 100s of "focus groups", zeroing in on and highlighting the desires of voters in Democratic strongholds. Maybe Chuck Todd could do a drive-by in Pittsburgh, PA on the way back from one of his thousand of trips to Beaver County.
Surely, Democratic Voters opinions on the direction they desire for the country will be "important" news.
I will be the first to run out and buy one of the many NY Times best-selling books by Retrumplican Senators, Congressional Representatives and Governors, criticizing Retrumplican politicians for "failing to understand" voters in Democratic areas of the country.
Democratic voters are hurting right now. I am sure there will be millions of opinion pieces from the media about the "importance" of learning why Democratic voters feel disrespected, ignored and abandoned by the Retrumplican Party. Isn't their love of Democracy, their aspirations for their children, their desire for the direction of the country, just as important as the price of eggs.?
Surely, the media will highlight the steps Retrumplicans will be required to take to "understand and reach-out" to these "salt-of-the-earth" Americans, right?

(16,700 posts)I made a comment about this type of thing yesterday. It's how the media glorifies and coddles the uneducated, rural white males and to a lesser extent the females. The political world revolves around this demographic and the question is never asked, "Why aren't the Republicans reaching the educated urban voters?". Personally, I thought Kamala WAS trying to reach this demographic. At least it seemed she tried. She spent a lot of time in those red rural counties.
Because of geography and the electoral college, that demographic holds disproportionate power. It's really a tragedy and a sham. (This is the subject of that book "Rural White Rage" by Schaller and Waldman).

(15,854 posts)Retrumplicans are NEVER asked to "reach-out", "understand" and "compromise". They are only asked what they will do to get Democratic voters to "comply".

(3,016 posts)where Bernie often eats breakfast, for insights? Maybe Sarah Longwell can come to our next Homeowners Association gathering for a focus group with a group of folks, many of whom are terrified about the future of their country?
Nah, thought not.

(13,375 posts)The 'utes of America swung the vote. They don't get their information from the N.Y. Times. Politicians do and that is the extent of influence of the mainstream media. America's voting youths get their information from TT, YT and podcasts.
We won't win until we recognize the changes in dissemination of information and learn how to respond to those changes.

(41 posts)also like to see articles about disaffected young females and their concerns and anxieties about living in an increasingly misogynistic country where even politicians at the top of the ticket disparage and demean them. The articles about reproductive rights are vital, but I fear that even these well-meaning articles reduce women's lives down to reproduction. And while we are admonished that we, as a country, are "leaving the young men behind" we are actively running young women over with a bus. Even now as young men are very publicly increasing their hatred and violent, rapey fantasies about controlling women, we are urged to understand their emotional pain at the expense of women's.

(46,935 posts)we can see it in places that elected a Dem Senator or Congressperson but also Trump for president. MI, WI, AZ, and NV all elected Dem senators but also the dumbest president to ever seek the office. Enough voters split their vote in those states.

(15,854 posts)They reached out to the "women are property", "rape jokes are cool" incel Dipshits.
The media gave them an assist.
Instead of stomping those immoral little pricks for their despicable, disgusting and deplorable attacks on women, the media, once again, presented this vile shit in a "how can we understand why these young men think rape is cool", way.
Whatever the deplorable act from the right, the media reaction is to "understand" what it is that makes them deplorable.
Is it the price of eggs, social isolation, or lack of opportunity that motivates them to be deplorable?
I have a clue for the media.
Maybe they are just deplorable human beings?

(1,310 posts)Your excellent analysis fairly dripped sarcasm, but was dead on.
Those whom I thought were reasonably intelligent people, seemed to have forgotten the lessons of Insurrection 101. ALWAYS take over radio, TV, and newspapers first. Gotta control the message.
Now, if your target is BIG, like Animal-Farm-On-Steroids big, ya can't grab everything all at once. Upsetting an applecart of those prodigious dimensions serves no one, economically speaking, and it gives the game away before the coin toss. Think Frog-in-ever-warming-water. Slow and steady, and the frog never knows what's going on until it too late.
Give a slime bucket like Rupert Murdoch a super-charged rocket sled to citizenship so he can own media in this country, throw the Fairness Doctrine in the wood chipper, and turn the motherfucker loose. Pack the courts with corrupt mental defectives with the moral compass of rabid hyenas, and feed them a daily diet of frivolous lawsuits against anything and everything that smells like democracy; follow Roy Cohn's advice and get dirt on anyone and everyone that might ever get in your way; splatter a couple of Libs all over the landscape just to put the fear of Gawd in the rest of 'em, and it's smooth sailing to Nazi Amerika 2.0. Ah! You forgot that there was a 1.0! Madison Square Garden, 1939, featuring Charles Lindbergh. Barrel o' laughs.
And here we are, boys and girls! Our own private Idaho of a Randian hellscape. You can check out, but you can never leave.
