I'm not going to lose sleep over things that could happen in the future. Taking it one day at a time..not watching any news at all since Nov 5th and don't plan on it.

(7,903 posts)Especially if the suffering in the form of worrying leads you to the suffering of planning your response - and iif necessary, preparing ahead.
People react in their own ways to events. My hubby loves (nice) surprises, but does not handle disappointment well at all. I'm just the opposite (I can handle a nice surprise provided no deceit was involved in it. But do not make up an elaborate story to get me to come to a surprise party for me. I will not appreciate it.)

(37,896 posts)Or had any emotional impact from it at all, and that is because I have a world view that factors this sort of thing in.
The other thing I have is working knowledge of the government. For example, almost everything that Lawrence Tribe said on his recent interview which was featured here was known to me. I was happy to see him cover these points, though, because it backed up my thinking.
People who don't have much experience with government or the use of lawsuits to fight egregious use of power like what trump has in mind wouldn't know these things, and that is, I think, why so many people are in such mental turmoil. If you've ever done these kinds of suits (which I have, for decades) you know the infinite possibilities. Most judges out there were not appointed by trump. We have a fair shot of stopping him through the courts.

(37,896 posts)Also, did you watch this link that you posted?
https://www.youtube.com/live/_aQXWR-r260
I watched for hours and hours. I might have fallen asleep at times but it wasn't for very long. The resources are vast. There were some very sharp people on that call: Jamie Raskin, for one. Many, many others.
On edit:
Here's another one that discusses the use of the law to stop trump from his nutzo wacko ideas:
This is LegalAF, which I listen to all the time. This particular episode talks about how republicans came up with all these strategies to make our activist lives hell....just in time for us to use them ourselves to make their lives hell!
littlemissmartypants
(25,496 posts)Going to watch it again. It's probably going to take me three or more views because there's so much information!!
Funny that we both fell asleep though!
Thanks for being a pal.

(37,896 posts)I was just thinking about you when I looked at Brian Lehrer's topics for his morning show. I was wondering if you have been listening. He's been doing trump segments for days and he usually won't even touch the topic because he thinks it's over done (and he's right, of course).
I haven't been listening, but that's because I'm involved in so many other things in the morning and also because I am done hearing about trump. He effs up everything he does. I don't know why I should start worrying now.
The callers to that show sometimes have far more sophisticated opinions than the usual "person on the street" type opinions.
The fact of the matter, though, is that so many people are very scared of trump and what they think he can do. Unless one has been in the trenches fighting, that is understandable. There are some far more clever people out there who can throw a wrench in the works. People like Jamie Raskin, a noted Constitutional scholar come to mind.

(4,333 posts)I've not watched news since the election. Didn't even stay around until it was "announced." When they called the election before the polls were even closed CST, I gave it up and went to bed instead.
I've got sleep problems due to old age and a Circadian clock that has always had a mind of its own (and out of sync with the rest of the US). I don't need to lay there and worry about what *could* happen; I've got enough around here to worry about that I can impact.
My time on DU has even been cut way down, too... as it is online, as a whole. Probably the best for me. DU is the only place I truly feel like "home," anyway. This, and recipe sites. Cooking seems to help me. I got two guys who are always hungry to take care of!

(15,531 posts)I dare not even turn on the TV for fear I will hear some news. We outlawed talk of Trump at bridge forever. I didn't cause this, I did everything in my power to stop it, (volunteer, donate) and there is nothing I can do right now.

(37,896 posts)Personally, I am taking a course on how music and mathematics relate.
Re television commentators, other than Lawrence and Rachel, I don't put too much stock in them. That is because I have found them making too many errors--not necessarily factual, but judgmental, and errors that show how little actual involvement they have had in government.
I have used the court system for decades, and I've also, mostly through my union, worked with legislators on the state level. (I have done a little federal, such as testifying to committees, like on airspace regulations). I don't share the cynicism that we find so often. People here are already screaming that the Democrats are doing nothing, but until you've been on the inside of working with legislators, you don't realize how careful one has to be. There could very well be plenty going on and we wouldn't know about it...yet.
In short, what I'm saying is that I'm not as alarmed as everyone else because of having worked in so many areas of government. The other is that Kamala Harris is very, very sharp. I would never want to go up against her.

(15,531 posts)I'm a retired lawyer. I worked in state/federal agencies for over 30 years. And for all those years, and more before, the right has been saying government employees are lazy and unnecessary and we should run the government like a business.
It isn't a business so it doesn't work you idiots. On a smaller scale look at private schools. They can show great test results and do it cheaper than public schools because private schools are not required to provide an education to people with disabilities. Or kids who are truant, or who need extra help because the private school kicks those kids out.
Drives me nuts. Clown cabinet indeed. As for Lawrence and Rachael, I like Nichol and Chris Hays too. YMMV
