In a media briefing on Tuesday night, the IDF Brig Gen Itzik Cohen told Israeli reporters that since troops had been forced to enter some areas twice, such as Jabaliya camp, there is no intention of allowing the residents of the northern Gaza Strip to return to their homes.
He added that humanitarian aid would be allowed to regularly enter the south of the territory but not the north, since there are no more civilians left.
On Thursday, an IDF spokesperson said Brig Gen Cohens comments had been taken out of context during a discussion about Jabaliya, and did not reflect the IDFs objectives and values. The spokesperson also said that the briefing had been on background, and the brigadier general should not have been quoted in Hebrew media reports that emerged.
It is unclear how many people remain in northern Gaza; last month, the UN estimated there were about 400,000 civilians unable or unwilling to follow Israeli evacuation orders. On Wednesday social media footage showed waves of several dozen displaced people carrying children and rucksacks and walking south through flattened areas of Gaza City.

(2,010 posts)The taxpayer-funded clearing of land and bodies in parts of the north. Not to mention the taxpayer-funded destruction of course. That part is fully done.
Almost ready for the settlers and Kushner. Patience, it won't be long now. Starvation and the IDF will take care of the rest soon.

Today I read that Blinken walked back his threat to withhold weapons from Israel if the humanitarian situation did not improve in 30 days. The 30 days are up and the situation is even more dire than it was then. The World Food Program just a few days ago issued an urgent warning about the starvation in the north especially.
Ethnic cleansing using starvation and terror is what is happening in the north and there is no political will by Israel's most powerful ally and major weapons supplier to stop it. It shouldn't be so hard to understand why the Muslims/Arabs in the U.S. can't see how it could get "so much worse".
Those poor people.

(1,631 posts)Other countries like Jordan, Syria and Lebanon are not able to do anything about it. The Gulf States (except, maybe, Qatar) are not pro Palestinian. Egypt has it's own problems with the Muslim Brotherhood. Europe makes some noise but doesn't want to get involved. The UK are the ones who gave them someone else's land so don't count on them. The US will never not be joined at the hip with Israel and will keep subsidizing and arming them - even though Israel bombed the USS Liberty and spied on our government.

Let's get Israel a carrier group, scores of thousands of state of the art tanks and artillery pieces, more ICBMs, a dozen nuclear subs, and 10,000 new gunships should be handy.
Ohh...Syria and Lebanon too. Thanks now!

(11,309 posts)The Guardian cites the Kan website in Hebrew as the source of their information (https://www.kan.org.il/content/kan-news/defense/820691/)
And here is the Google Translate version of the source in English:
Division 162 operates in Jabaliya under the command of Brigadier General Itzik Cohen, where within 48 hours they succeeded in severing the connection between Gaza City and the north of the Gaza Strip.
Since the operation began in Jabaliya, 700 surrendered terrorists have been arrested, including dozens of terrorists who participated in the massacre on October 7 at the Erez crossing and the Black Arrow monument and have since provided intelligence information in their investigations. A thousand terrorists were eliminated during the operation. According to a senior commander, it can be seen in the last few days that "the enemy escaped" from Jabaliya and that last night almost 50 terrorists were killed in ambushes and sniper fire.
"You see an enemy who is desperate for his life, acting in a guerilla fashion and looking for opportunities." said Brigadier General Cohen. According to the IDF, the operation in Jabaliya is troubling Hamas and the activity is intended, among other things, to produce tools for further negotiations for the release of the abductees in the era after Yahya Sinwar.
A senior IDF official who is familiar with the programs in Jabaliya said that he is not familiar with the initiative known as the "Champion Program" and that he is only acting according to the instructions of the General Staff and the approval of the Chief of Staff.
The refugee camp is trapped by Hamas with dozens of explosives designed to trap IDF soldiers. So far, 200 trapped houses have been located. The IDF says that during combat, it develops exercises with the aim of reducing harm to the fighters, including the use of technology, dogs, and the use of IML on building before entering the buildings.
The IDF estimates that only thousands of people remain in the central centers in the northern Gaza Strip: between 1,000 and 3,000 in Beit Lahia and 1,000 in Jabaliya. The IDF says that after entering Jabaliya twice in the past, this time there is no intention of allowing the residents of the northern Gaza Strip to return to their homes and that Humanitarian aid will regularly enter the south of the Gaza Strip - since there are no more civilians left north of Gaza City.
Senior IDF officials were asked if there is a decision to split the northern Gaza Strip into two parts, Gaza City and the northern neighborhoods, and they answered that the decision is to cut off the northern Gaza Strip from Gaza City.
Referring to the claims of harming civilians, Brigadier General Cohen emphasized: "The IDF is a moral and ethical army. We are working in this operation in a significant way to allow the population to move south while risking our lives. Hamas uses civilians as a significant center of gravity, threatens them and shoots under their protection. Just yesterday At night, shots were fired from a hospital at Givati forces."
Clearly, the context points to two centers north of Gaza City which are currently active war zones. In this context, it is clear that there is no intention to return the residents to a war zone for as long as it remains a war zone.
Cue in Kushner, land grab and genocide. Because IDF doesn't intend the residents of the areas in a war zone to be subjected to ongoing hostilities between belligerent armed forces.
But isn't this exactly what the Geneva Conventions mandate?
The Guardian and company are full of shit.
