I guess I am naive, but this comes as a shock to me. I am past my reproductive years, but I care very, very much about women's reproductive rights. I care about the rights of immigrants and minorities. I care about the rights of future generations to a clean environment.
There are those who cared so much about everyone's right to freedom that they gave their lives in war. To Trump they are known as suckers and losers.
The voters who cared more about the price of eggs than pregnant women dying in red states... they shock me. Don't they have women in their lives?
Whose rights does Trump care about? He does not care for anyone's rights or needs or wants except his own.

While a kinder and more gentle parenting style is fine, people still need to be parents
and do some hard work turning kids into decent adults.
Parents kept constantly praising children for doing nothing or even failing.
Real self esteem is based on actual performance.
So kids began to have unrealistic views of themselves.
Also kids ran wild at home and school and parents refused to discipline the kids.
They didn't want to upset the kids, the kids might not like going to their room for an hour.
Therapists said that is the point of consequences, kids don't like it so they don't kick their teachers or mom.
So I think we see the logical consequences of this now.

Young people today won't even go out to vote and when they do they vote for pure evil.

(57,625 posts)Women today take it all for granted.
When I was young women had three career choices: nurse, teacher, secretary.
Most women were just housewives.
They could not get into graduate schools.
They could not have checking accounts or credit cards unless co-signed by a male.
No equal pay, no reproductive rights.
Boomers protested and fought very hard to get you those rights.
And there is no appreciation whatsoever apparently.

(64,377 posts)Exit polls suggest that younger people shifted toward Trump. For the first time, older voters were tied in their choice. The age group where a majority voted for Trump was, basically, Gen X. And everybody's talking about how so many Millennials and Gen Z voted for Trump.
This is a big change in voting patterns. I think it's the result of two intertwined issues.
The first is the one you mention - a parenting style that tended to protect children from the world's hard knocks, parents who strove to protect and nurture our children well into adulthood. Why did we do this? Because we could. We had more time, money, and resources than our parents had. Why? Because of the booming post WWII U.S. economy and the strides made by Democratic congresses. A massive expansion in civil rights, opening opportunities for many people. We did well and we lavished attention on our kids. And our kids are less mature, less resilient, more willing to believe Trump's easy lies.
The other issue is the contraction of the economy since the 90s. My older kids are Millennials. They face an economy where the cost of living has skyrocketed and wages are flat, unless you're a social influencer or online marketing whiz. My kids know who's at fault (the Republican policies that systematically shifted wealth to the rich over decades), but even they are weary. They feel the Democrats are too tentative, too incremental. They see that Trump is blatantly lying, but they also see why so many their age believe him.
I think the people in their 40s and 50s who voted for Trump - the age group where a majority actually went for Trump - want to believe his lies. They're tired. Things are harder than they were promised. They see all this wealth online and on TV. Where's their part?
I don't know what will happen next.
