They want to the right of their immorality and the right to force it upon us. We have a right to not associate with it. They dont listen. They are not convincible. They are not into having honest conversations. They want to wield power over you. Either forcefully, bullying, crying victim, manipulation, and just plain old meanness.
They know what they voted for. And they cant bear to hear it repeated back to them. So they revolt even further. Just dont give them the time of day. Any attention you provide to them helps them become more powerful. Because really they dont give a shit, but you have wasted your time, energy and breath.
Anyone telling you different at this time is not understanding this dynamic. They want total control no matter how, what, when, where. There is NO compromise. They are not going to change their minds until they suffer. A suffering they will have inflicted upon themselves. Lets become the angry, silent majority. The one they dont see coming.

(36,295 posts)Find out what policies and programs are popular with the diminishing base, the non voters and new voters.
This isn't that hard

(53 posts)Perhaps it's harder than you think and perhaps those non-voters and new voters would end up being mobilized by the other side. I'm sorry, but politically, ignoring those we disagree with isn't working. But also historically speaking, have a bunch of unmarried unhappy guys is bad for a society. Better to help them turn towards a better way of living rather than being angry violent people who lash out.

(36,295 posts)No political party is responsible for helping them find a better way to live, etc. They should seek counseling or move back in with Mom
Democrats need to reevaluate the misguided policies over the decades of compromising on wages, healthcare, military budget, $$ in elections, etc. Nothing to lose by finding out if those things are of interest to the base and nonvoters

(13,861 posts)Even skilled therapists have years of work to reprogram them, and the cult member has to first acknowledge that they have a problem.
The brainwashing continues to tell them that everything is someone else's fault.
Spend time with friends and family.

(178 posts)And I'm who they'll come to for help, being the dutiful person I am. I have to have that "what if..." conversation, to maybe have a plan when benefits are cut, with someone who perceives no danger at all.

(13,861 posts)People get so locked into beliefs that they don't see downsides. That's when emotion overrides logic.
The other exit often is hitting rock bottom.
Cult members are always losers. They are given "group" feeling and usually "permission" to do socially rotten things like racism, hate, violence, theft and so on. But they always pay by losing their identity, dignity, money, health, opportunity and sometimes life, itself.
Mobs and addiction show similar signs because they work on similar weaknesses in tbe brain.
Works by Anne Wilson Schaef are an intro to this, focused on addiction and how organization abd even society show the same symptoms.
I can edit later to give more references.
"Hate is blind"
Losers ard told they are winners, but they pay enormously to hear and believe the lies.

(178 posts)I appreciate that advice. The love is there, and a whole lot of patience with an elderly person. In our case, it's a long held belief in Libertarianism. That branched in thinking the "grass roots" tea party folks were a fine example of the people waking up. I heard it so many times, The people are waking up! Because Obama was so bad? I don't know.
Then along came tfg. They support him and have no idea what he stands for. Only family can laugh at social assistance programs, while they're looking right at you, the person they'll go to without them. And the disabled sibling who needs 24 hour care? I'm there for that too!
I'm sure I won't be the only one in a situation like that. Its just lousy to worry about. When the fools that support tfg get hurt, it will hurt a lot of us too.

(13,861 posts)I got out my Anne Wilson Schaef books and looked at the addictive traits. My goodness, when I first saw them, bells were ringing. It was the way many bosses ran small companies in Silicon Valley.
Libertarianism means running roughshod over everyone else because you're "privileged" by color or smarts or dad's money. We are all connected and interdependent. Libertarianism is perverted.
Anyway, we need to support each other. Hard for me, living in the boondocks, but that might change. I am 75 and think young. Younger than half the population, for sure.
Strong people lift others up. Weak people try to cut others down to their size. I look at how people treat others and often say: "Ideology is bullshit. Your religion and beliefs are how you live and treat others. "
Cherie Carter-Scott says:
Others are only mirrors of you.
You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself. Each reflection is an opportunity for growth.

Sometimes, people make it real tough, but rather than trying try to deal with them, I have unfinished good works to do with and for family and friends.
And here.

(178 posts)Those were fine thoughts to share.
It sounds like the books by Anne Wilson Schaef were a revelation, things like that are important, understanding what's really going on with someone.
Libertarians, I'll just not get started. Okay maybe a little. I'll never live down having those beliefs. One thing I've learned is that brilliant (and average people like me) people can believe stupid things, for emotional reasons I think. It's not that all the magas are dumb. Just deluded, I guess is the proper word. And also that just because someone is smart doesn't mean they won't lie. Smart people aren't always good people. They can be maga.
Those were great quotes too.

(13,861 posts)Sometimes people can no longer hold the contradiction in their minds.
Unless it's someone close, let it go. Skilled therapists take years to unwind the damage.
Like addiction, many come close to rock bottom and pull out, however they can. Many don't.
The pain has to outweigh "owning the libs" as their lives go down the drain. And it will, with Caligula in charge.
