NJ-SEN: Fmr. Senate President Sweeney (D) Seeking Governor's Office in 2025 Race
NEW JERSEY -- Former State Senate President Steve Sweeney formally threw his hat into the race for New Jersey Governor on Monday in a video posted online touting his service in public office and personal bona fides.
In the announcement video, Sweeney touted his roots as an ironworker working on buildings around the state and a lawmaker for two decades.
Sweeney says that the birth of his daughter, Lauren, who was born prematurely with Down's Syndrome, "then I learned how hard it can be to get services for people with special needs. That's what turned me into a public servant."
He underscored items in his legislative record to change laws for people with disabilities to improve access to training, jobs and health care. Sweeney also highlighted critical legislation he promoted to raise the state's minimum wage, create paid family leave, and legalize marriage equality.
