Teslas Toxic Culture Has Spread to Its New Plant in Austin
Allegations of sexual harassment, racial discrimination, and dangerous conditions are now surfacing at another Tesla factory.

JoAn Rogers started working at Teslas Gigafactory plant in Austin, Texas, two years ago. It sounded interesting. It was something different, the 59-year-old said, and Tesla paid her $18.50 an hour to start out, which Rogers felt was decent pay. Rogers commuted an hour by car each way from her house to the plant, but she still arrived on time. She worked hard, getting good evaluations. I gave those people 100 percent of me, she said.
At first, she liked the job. But this past March, her area in a part of the plant called the general store, where workers received package deliveries, got a new, male supervisor. Soon Rogers noticed that any time he was near herwhether walking toward her or standing next to herhe touched and adjusted his penis in her sightline. It happened daily.
Rogers had never experienced sexual harassment from a coworker or supervisor, not even when she worked in a prison. So she asked her leada staff member who oversaw her teamto say something so that the supervisor would stop. As far as she could tell, the lead didnt address the issue with the supervisor. Instead, she started getting threatened with write-ups for things that werent her fault. So she escalated the situation, first up the chain of command and then to human resources. But human resources sent me right back around to the same people giving me problems, she said. They direct you to go back to your abuser. They wont fix anything. People in charge of her team took her aside to tell her that it was only going to hurt her if she talked to anyone other than them about what was happening.
Two other women complained about the same behavior, and still, nothing was done, she said. Then the man sexually harassing her started to write her up for everything that I did, she said. He just made life miserable. Tesla policy, she and other workers have told The Nation, is that someone with a write-up on their file cant be promoted or receive a raise or bonus, which prevented her from moving somewhere else in the plant. He wrote me up so I could not leave the department, she said. It was a nightmare.
Tesla is on the cutting edge of the green economy, by far the top maker of American electric vehicles. But despite its being such an advanced company, its culture appears to be stuck in a different century. One reason may be that it gets set at the top by a man with a long history of questionable behavior. CEO Elon Musk himself has been accused of sexual harassment. He named his cars the Models S, 3, X, and Y to spell sexy, which he then emblazoned on the seat of red satin shorts. In September, after pop artist Taylor Swift endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for president, he targeted her on his social media platform X with threats of sexual assault.

(19,625 posts)My Teamster's-unionized dairy plant in Minnesota pays $26/hr to start, and ramps up to $28/hr after a year. Night shift differential, and plenty of OT if you want it. Excellent health care, vision, dental, and a pension. All the free cottage cheese, yogurt and sour cream you can eat too (lol).
We don't even require a high school diploma anymore, though I think we still require a GED. And we STILL have difficulty filling positions.

He thought it was a joke, but it wasn't. Needless to say, he left that job in a hurry.
Musk didn't get so wealthy by paying decent wages. He got that way by abusing people. Fuck that Nazi to hell.

Tesla vehicles suffer fatal accidents at a rate that's twice the industry average, according to a new report.

Tesla's vehicles have the highest fatal accident rate among all car brands in America, according to a recent iSeeCars study that analyzed data from the U.S. Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
The study was conducted on model year 20182022 vehicles, and focused on crashes between 2017 and 2022 that resulted in occupant fatalities. Tesla vehicles have a fatal crash rate of 5.6 per billion miles driven, according to the study; Kia is second with a rate of 5.5, and Buick rounds out the top three with a 4.8 rate. The average fatal crash rate for all cars in the United States is 2.8 per billion vehicle miles driven.
The study also breaks down some of the data for individual models. The Tesla Model S has a rate more than double than average, at 5.8 per billion vehicle miles driven; meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y the best-selling vehicle in the world has a fatal crash rate of 10.6, nearly four times the average.

It's a dubious belief, albeit widely held, that electric cars are "green."
I covered that point here:
A paper addressing the idea that electric cars are "green."
Widespread belief in this questionable thesis has apparently helped the world's oldest Democracy to collapse, and perhaps with it, the planetary atmosphere.

(34,093 posts)I was working next to an old guy in the car factory. His daughter, 18 and just started working there, came over crying. The Forman had just told her she had to give him a bj or he was going to put her on the hardest job.
He call our union rep over. The rep called the Plant Rep down and told him. He turned around and said Wildcat , lets walk.
The whole plant walked out and didnt go back to work until that foreman was fired.
From that day on, Ive been a proud UAW member.

(1,937 posts)Is that they are NOT on your side. They exist to protect the company first and foremost, NOT the workers, despite claims to the contrary.
They can, will, and do take the side of the abusive higher ups, for said reasons above. Never go to them unless the law is unquestionably on your side, with proof.
