Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow do YOU think the incoming administration will impact YOU?
I know we tend to internalize things as if they affected us directly. But apart from emotionally, they don't.
I also put on the table the notion that bad news for some is good news for others. The stock market has many examples of such.
Again, this is about just YOU.

(4,732 posts)So I anticipate Trump will affect me by:
- fucking up the next global pandemic
- fucking up the situation in the Middle East and/or Taiwan and/or North Korea in a way the sparks global war that sucks in former US allies
- doing nothing about climate change for another four years as we pass the tipping point for catastrophic mass extinction events. The area I live in will probably become more flood prone.
- giving aid and comfort to extreme nationalists and kooks in other countries in a way that undermines other global democracies
- not investing in medical treatments that help women or trans people or people generally ("hitting pause on research into infectious diseases"/not investing in stem cell research or other new therapies to fight cancer, diabetes, or promoting longevity)
- not investing in green energy hands the future to China with a giant bow around it. Delays to clean energy options for flying means I will continue to delay taking overseas trips until there is a more ethical way to fly.
but
- suspect that we will benefit from a silly tariff-based trade war between the US and China

(11,835 posts)I have been retired several years and rely on the income from the savings from 45 years of work, most of it now invested in the stock and bond markets. I could probably live without Social Security, but not if the economy goes south and the stock market tanks. I will be moving some investments to a money market fund, but high inflation that would result from tariffs and food and other scarcities resulting from deported workers would put a strain even on that.
Since most of my savings were in 401k funds, cashing them out also results in tax penalties, so I want to avoid too much of that.
My hope is that Trumps billionaire backers want to keep the market healthy for their own benefit and are able to convince him to abandon some of his economic plans.

(15,120 posts)Health care reforms going to be a big part of the agenda. When I say were going to have a very aggressive first 100 days agenda, we got a lot of things still on the table, Johnson, R-La., said in Bethlehem as he campaigned for GOP House candidate Ryan Mackenzie, according to video obtained by NBC News.
No Obamacare? an attendee asked Johnson, referring to the law Democrats passed in 2010, also known as the Affordable Care Act.
No Obamacare, Johnson responded, rolling his eyes. The ACA is so deeply ingrained, we need massive reform to make this work, and we got a lot of ideas on how to do that.

(17,154 posts)While I don't think our program will be decimated as some have said, I do believe our budgets will change and we'll be on another hiring freeze.
Personally, it'll affect my care for vets and my ability to work with them more extensively. If there are staff cuts which is highly likely all departments will be working a lot harder.

More regulations that control/limit us.

(56,556 posts)I dont do violence, but I would do self-defense if they came after my family. But Im here in the EU, and my US daughter still has her German passport, so do her children. Her husband doesnt, but I think theyd let him in.
I do my satires, but Im pretty far down the list from Colbert and Kimmel. Theyd have to go into full National Socialist confiscation mode before that would affect me, and since all my stuff is in Dallas, Im a pretty small fish in the land of Perot.

(6,105 posts)I'm retired, but pick up substitute teacher gigs to augment my meager retirement. Our school district is small, and has declining enrollment because families cannot afford to live here. They've reduced some classes, so there is a dramatic drop off in sub jobs, and they are on a hiring freeze. Since the election, the drop in sub jobs is much more noticeable. NO ONE is calling out sick now.
After that, I worry about cuts in SS, Medicare/Medicaid, and potential housing disruptions if small businesses start to fold in the area, or the major employers start cutbacks. Could see a lot of new homeless folks.
We havea lot of vacation rentals here. I'll be curious to see if they are affected. That would be a good thing, in my view. That housing needs to go to locals.

B. I'm currently collecting Social Security and am on Medicare.
C. I have multiple family members in the LGBTQ community.
As of now, we don't know what will happen with any of the above, but these are the issues I am most concerned with.

(7,965 posts)I work at an department of energy laboratory. Thankfully, not in an area that they explicitly said they would cut (renewable energy, climate change, etc..) but in nuclear physics. I anticipate the whole department of energy will get some cuts across the board and hope it won't affect me but who knows.

(2,177 posts)Beyond that- last time Trump did a tax overhaul, somehow our taxes went up despite claims the new simplified method was going to be easier and save us all money so I expect that might all happen again. I do have LGBTQ+ family members very close to me I'm concerned about but they seem less concerned than I am so I don't know... one of us is in the public sector so there could be a job shake up, one of us has a chronic illness that requires lifelong medication so who tf knows what might happen if they roll back obamacare et al and no longer protect those with pre-existing conditions.
On the up side, our retirement funds are sky rocketing right now.
There are of course tons of tangential issues that could touch us- from simple stuff like, if we finally get an EV will there still be a tax break to will interest rates drop enough for my kid to finally buy a house... but those kinds of questions seem more "normal", the kind of stuff you wonder and worry about in any new administration.

(9,599 posts)I'm under 50 and I still work. I take care of a dementia client in the morning through my hiring company and I clean some homes independently.
I've renewed my enhanced drivers license (doesn't expire until January). I originally got it right before he got in the WH the last time. This time when I renewed, I wasn't expecting him to get back in but thankfully I had the money so I went ahead and renewed. Mine cost $94.50 but it's good for 8 years.
I've been purchasing extra paper products (not hoarding, not price gouging) just in case. I'm thinking potential pandemic here.
I've lost a great deal amount of weight and so I'm been slowly replacing clothing that's too large for me. Last week I got 2 new lounge pants. I'm thinking potential tariffs here.
I've replaced some older and bent curtain rods with new curtain rods. Again, I'm thinking potential tariffs here.
My 7 year old oven hasn't been preheating or heating up like it should. So I have an appointment soon for a repair service to look at it. I'm going to guess that if it's a part like the ignitor it's most likely made outside the USA, so might as well get it fixed or replaced now.
I'll be inquiring about my flu and covid vaccinations right before January 20th.
I'm "prepping" basically. I did this the last time as well. I don't know what else I'm suppose to do except being prepared.
