"Fox News has substantial effects up and down the ballot. It boosts Republican candidates in House, Senate, gubernatorial, and presidential elections. We show that the mechanism for these electoral effects is that FNC has shifted Americans partisanship and ideological preferences to the right."
Propaganda really hurts us.

(70 posts)If you look at their results, partisanship, policy ideology and symbolic ideology all really spiked around 2008 to 2009 and have stayed elevated since.
In the 2000 and 2004 elections, FNCs impact was minimal, likely due to its growing viewership. By 2008, a one-standard-deviation decrease in FNCs channel position correlated with a 0.32 increase in the Republican vote share.
Fox News was founded in 1996, so its not like Americans didnt know it was there in 2000 and 2004. What else started happening in the media landscape around like 2007 to 2009 that has accelerated since?
The collapse of local news was beginning to take hold. Newspaper advertising, circulation and employment were near peak levels in 2004. Between then and 2019, the U.S. lost 25% of its newspapers.
Other researchers studying local news decline have concluded that when local newspapers shutter, readers turn to national outlets like Fox that are more focused on gladiator-style partisan conflict, and among other things, split-ticket voting drops. Voters become more polarized.
You cant study Foxs role in our media landscape in a vacuum. This research seems to suggest that its ascent to the position of influence it holds today owes a lot to (or is at the very least correlated with) the business model crisis for local news.
