5. Hannah Arendt - evil can be mundane.

At the university frequented by members of the White Rose, students took classes -they read, discussed material, and took exams.

Faculty taught and worked in their specializations. One professor of German reflected on his experience after the war was over and The Holocaust more fully revealed. He said he wondered during the war if he should participate in political actions to bring the Nazi regime down. He said that he didn’t because his colleagues assured him that his academic work on Middle High German was excellent and he should keep at it. Also, everyone talked about Hitler as a fool who couldn’t do real damage.

One of the White Rose’s actions was to print fliers telling the truth about what was happening. They had planned to leave some fliers outisde each classroom door for students to find. On one occasion they couldn’t move fast enough to get to all the classrooms so one member dropped the fliers from an upper floor into the stairwell that fluttered everywhere. He was spotted.
