A powerful bomb cyclone will combine with an atmospheric river to unleash over a months worth of rain, hurricane-force wind gusts and feet of mountain snow to parts of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California.
A storm system off the Pacific Northwest is expected to rapidly intensify on Tuesday in a phenomenon called bombogenesis and earn it the moniker of bomb cyclone. It will intensify so much so quickly that it could become a triple-bomb, tripling the criteria needed to be considered a bomb cyclone, the National Weather Service in San Francisco said.
Bomb cyclones are formidable and unload heavy snow and strong winds during the winter. This one could be among the most intense on record for its location, a storm that occurs only about once every ten years, and will generate some of the strongest winds we have seen in several years that churn up very dangerous mountainous seas of 30 to 35 feet, the National Weather Service in Medford, Oregon, said.
This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend.

(10,218 posts)Ran all the errands, did all the yard work, grabbed all the food and snacks from Costco. We're all hunkered down for the next few days. We're in North Bay, expected to get a month of rain Wed-Fri. So that'll be fun.
Movie list activate.

(874 posts)county house. I have a 25 acre farm in Paskenta Tehama county that back up against the coastal range, (Not too far from Yolla Bolly & on a clear day, we can see Shasta). Our property is parallel to Mendocino county, (Covelo & Round Valley, if you know that area). Yeah, we know from bomb cyclone and I haven't forgetten those "long ago 10 years".

(874 posts)probably going to show up & show out anywhere from the early afternoon through the early evening. I'm at my Sacramanto county home , NORTH of both the City & most, if not all of Marin county. We're pretty much at the same latitude with Sonoma County. I'm ALMOST in Sutter County. Right glad TAMEETCHA...Been here since 2005.

(7,890 posts)Hopefully it's over and done by then and roads plowed since I'm not real good driving on snow and ice. Especially an 8 passenger van even if it does have all weather tires.
Best of luck to y'all in Northern California and the Pacific NW!

(10,218 posts)We usually ski at Northstar (haven't been since pre-Covid, tho). We want to get up there this year, and I just read they're opening this weekend, which is early.
Of course, you have to actually drive through the snow to get there. So . . .

(4,848 posts)The one we had on New Year's Eve a couple years ago ripped our roof up so badly it had to be replaced. So... at least the roof is new. Hope it holds up!
The winds don't look so bad in the forecast for our area, and that was the worst part of the other one. But they didn't predict what we actually got that time, either, so who knows?
Whatever we get, we are as ready as we can be.

(874 posts)garden around my house. ONE of the tallest trees almost bent to the roof, (I have a 2 story TRUE townhome- we share no walls but we close as hell to the neighbours to the north and south. I stayed up all night monitoring that tree. Of course, it floods here but I'll monitor Dry Creek, which is pretty much an Arroyo which can go from bone dry to a raging water way in less than 24 hours. Are you anywhere near the Napa River?

(874 posts)My Sacramento home is in the North Natomas area. The Sacramento is about 3.5-5.5 miles from me. If you've ever travelled out of Sacramento International, you were about 2.5-4 miles to the west southwest.
