cut the Federal Minimum Wage. I think SSI Disability payments for services for the disabled will be drastically cut as well. They'll cut those people back to just food and housing. You know they will gut what little is left of OSHA, NOAA, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Library of Congress, The National Archives (for revenge), the Federal Railroad Administration, the Federal Pipeline Safety Administration and many more.
I wanted to mention specific agencies or things that haven't been really touched on.

(16,770 posts)impact a lot of vulnerable people. I'm thinking in particular of the husband of the one MAGA "friend" I'm still in touch with. While I don't know all of their financial circumstances, I have reason to believe it could be disastrous for them.
NOAA would be very distressing for so many reasons. My family is filled with people who depend on NOAA weather radio, especially during our monsoon (June to August) and over the winter. Weather radio is free and saves lives, and I know truck drivers probably depend on it too, unless they have gravitated towards other sources of that information.
Also, just on a personal level, I've had some dealings with our National Weather Service people in Flagstaff and they are so nice and hard working and such a pleasure to deal with.
What will we do with all our weather radios? (I literally have five or six)

(697 posts)There are eight Uniformed Services. Six are considered Military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force). The other two Uniformed Services are NOAA and US Public Health Service.
All who join and serve in these eight Uniformed Services are considered active duty. All members of Uniformed Services, for example, can become eligible for VA benefits.
Project 2025 believes NOAA should be broken up and downsized." As in dissolved and privatized.
Why? Three reasons.
...1) follow the money. Project 2025 wants to fully commercialize NOAAs forecasting operations." That is, Project 2025 wants to charge for popular and necessary weather-related services that now are free through NOAA. Somebodys gonna get rich if MAGA co-opts NOAA materials and services.
...2) Project 2025 believes NOAAs scientific approach runs counter to Project 2025s climate-change narrative. Project 2025 sees NOAA as a primary component of the climate change alarm industry." Project 2025 wants NOAA to become "performance-based (read: NOT science-based ). Project 2025 wants NOAA to be held accountable for achieving specific results, even if the head of NOAA must "deviate from government rules" (read: fudge the numbers ) to achieve MAGA-friendly results.
...3) This is MAGAs foot-in-the-door toward privatizing the six Military Services -- If thy can do it to NOAA, they can do it to Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force. Voila! TSFs own private military.
A far cry from the days when I played with plastic soldiers from the five-and-dime.

When insurers control your healthcare, they can decide to cancel you at any time to increase their profits. That is exactly what Republicans want.

(5,705 posts)out in the Dakotas the NOAA weather service radio reports have saved me many times. Tornado time too. Excellent local weather and because my radios are multi-channel I can pick up the next area I'm traveling to a good long time before I get there. They are so great about wind speed and wind gust level and mentioning pretty precise reports town by town and the forecasts. Knowing ahead of time about horrible conditions ahead gives a person time to find a place to pull over and let the weather blow through rather than running into the problem and finding yourself surrounded in a blizzard with high winds for instance.

(2,052 posts). . . Cut farmers crop insurance, price supports, and other subsidies.
In my rural VA county, according to USDA stats, around $1 million per year flows in to various farmers, every one of whom voted for Trump - the county has gone for Trump by 70% in all three past elections.
And when they lose that money and start losing farms that have been in their families for seven generations, I will laugh my ass off at every one of them - YOU ASKED FOR IT, FOOL!!!
Think. Again.
(17,901 posts)We've known for decades that the republican party, and rightwingers in general, have agressively hostile personalities.
And of course there isn't going to be any improvement in mental health care for a long time to try to treat these people.
We made a big mistake by treating Americans with malicious tendencies as though they were just political opponents.

(276 posts)Not just GOP but Dems do it too. The worse part of it is that some use environmental protection as the reason.
The huge corporate farms soak up most of the subsidies and get paid for essentially not farming in some states in the south. Trump had to cough up billions to give to farmers because his last tariffs when he was in office raised the cost to all farmers while sum received most of the subsidies and tax cuts. A lot of small and minority farmers had to fight really hard to get anything. That system has been going on for decades. But Trump administration was a doozy on this. Read about it here. And research about how many farmers stopped growing food in favor of making huge sums of money from growing Weed. Legalization was the goal for a long time and not just because imprisonment of huge numbers of black and Latino men and women was ridiculously unfair but because the financial gains by white "entrepreneurs" would be astronomical. As soon as that happened, even some evangelical holy rollers starting switching over from food to weed. Just search out the info. It's all out there and it is pretty disgusting when you think about the unnecessarily high cost of food now. Some places in the country forbid even growing your own food.

(16,770 posts)it was a caller to the Progress channel on SiriusXM. Maybe it's a conspiracy theory, but it made sense: that one motive behind the tariffs was to put smaller farmers out of business so that the agricultural giants could snap up small farms for cheap and absorb them into their monopolies. (I'm agnostic on this theory, but there's a certain cruel and cynical logic to it.)

(17,430 posts)Farms have consolidated into mega corporations for the most part. Family farms are no more. Those that call themselves family farmers run multimillion dollar enterprises, even if they look dirt poor. There just arent a lot of them. Not like there once were.
Homesteaders arent farmers in an economic sense. They dont move crops to market in bulk. They dont get subsidies and they arent impacted by market prices other than feed and seed.
Corporate farmers do have lobbyists, and spend heavily on legislation to keep them propped up and in the high cotton.
Yes, they scream through the astroturf, but numbets? Not any more. Just money and the fools than can cheat.

(1,788 posts)But it wouldn't have as big an effect as you might think. 30 states + DC already have higher minimum wage rates than the Federal rate, including 3 of the 4 largest states. They cover over 62% of the total population of the US. In 2022, only 1.3% of hourly workers earned at or below the minimum wage, which is the lowest since data collection began in 1979.
https://usafacts.org/articles/minimum-wage-america-how-many-people-are-earning-725-hour/
The Federal minimum wage should absolutely be raised significantly, not cut. But at this point, unless states start cutting their minimum wages, cutting the Federal minimum wage level would not have a significant impact. Since most states have a significantly higher minimum wage than the Federal rate, it puts pressure on employers in states without a higher state minimum wage, to pay a higher wage than the Federal minimum.
Now if we entered an economic Depression, the impact would certainly be higher but it's unclear how big an impact with the higher state minimum wages still in effect. The percentage of workers earning the Federal minimum did increase during the Great Recession but came back down rather quickly as the economy improved.
