Marius Borg Hoiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been arrested on suspicion of rape, police said, the latest charge in a months-long saga that has cast a shadow over the popular royal family.
Hoiby, the stepson of the heir to the Norwegian throne, Crown Prince Haakon, was taken into custody Monday evening.
The 27-year-old is accused of violating a section of the country’s criminal code that “applies to sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act,” Oslo police said in a statement Tuesday.
Hoiby “does not admit criminal guilt” to the rape charge, his lawyer, Oyvind Bratlien, said in an email.
He will only plead guilty to charges of bodily harm against his last girlfriend, as well as criminal damage to her apartment and a threat in relation to an episode in which Hoiby was briefly detained in August after an altercation with her in downtown Oslo.
In an interview with NRK in August, Hoiby said he had been under the influence of alcohol and cocaine during that incident and lashed out following an argument. He promised to resume treatment for substance abuse.
