Yahoo Finance
Major American retailers Walmart (WMT) and Lowes (LOW) raised concerns that President-elect Donald Trumps proposed tariffs would make their products more expensive, just as consumers are beginning to recover from the impacts of inflation.
Walmart CFO John David Rainey hinted in an interview with Yahoo Finances Brian Sozzi on Tuesday that Trumps tariff promises would prompt the retailer to hike costs, pointing to the impact of higher tariffs enacted during the president-elect's first term under his America First agenda. If we look back historically when tariffs were enacted seven years ago, it did result in higher prices for customers, Rainey said.

(102 posts)If I thought they were price gouging I'd buy from a different seller. There's a grocer about 1.5 miles from our home. My wife and I like Kraft Buttermilk Ranch dressing on some of the foods we eat at home. For a 16 oz bottle at our local grocer it's just over $7 for 1 bottle. This happened about 3 to weeks ago. They do have buttermilk ranch, 16 oz bottle for half the cost, but it's not Kraft. We like the Kraft brand. At a grocer about 10 miles from us, they carry Kraft. Same 16 oz bottle for $2.97. Guess where I go?

(57,591 posts)They take advantage of people who may take the bus to the store, or walk, or rely on rides.
Some people may be stuck with the high prices.
And some times you can find the price of one item more reasonable in a store,
but their other items are higher priced, defeating the whole reason for traveling.

(102 posts)YES!!! That's one heck of a markup. That's the most I've ever seen Kraft Buttermilk Ranch go for EVER. When we do go to the grocer about 10 miles away, we make a big list and grab everything on it so we won't have to come back a few days later. Sticking to only what's on the list is the hard part. We have a Walmart about 13 miles from us. Occasionally we go there and stock up on canned stuff. We do order quite a bit online from Walmart.

(57,591 posts)I did this during covid and after an injury and surgery.
I just order what I need.
But when I am in the store I always have to detour to aisles with some goodies.
