(7,904 posts)but others are helped by it - just like pretty much everything else in life.
Jimmy Carter is pretty devout, and he doesn't appear to me to have been morally poisoned. On the other hand, the most loving, giving, and kind person I know is an atheist. He was poisoned by religion as a child (byi his own account (I wasn't there) and for him atheism was the antidote.
Certain drugs can help people mentally, emotionally, and morally improve. For others, the same drugs are poisonous.
I will gladly agree that religion, when mixed with government and used as a hammer to beat citizens into compliance - that's poison. No question about it.
However, there are religious people in government respect and support church-state separation and, instead of trying to push religion into government, work to meet the needs of all citizens. Mostly you (and I) don't know who they are, because they just practice their religion, instead of making it a nuicance for everyone. I believe Jow Biden is one of them.

(40,177 posts)Judas was an early, modern-day, conservative disciple.
Judas got 30 pieces of silver, but just once, for selling Christ.
Franklin Graham, Jim Bakker, Pat Robertson, and their ilk get millions of dollars repeatedly for selling Christ.
Judas was a fool for doing a one-time sale.

Not that such would've been a bad thing.

(376 posts)Jesus said something like, "Evil must happen, but woe onto him who does it." So Judas is still guilty, I think... including his despair after his betrayal of his Master, so that he committed suicide.
Then again, if he repented in his final moments of consciousness... ???
And not all Xians are bad: there's this reverend name Martin who has a national holiday!

I've been listening to Nancy Mace shrieking about Sarah McBride coming into the capitol and using the women's restroom. Of course, she's turned a blind eye to the fact that children and teenagers are much more likely to be sexually violated and abused by someone in their church than any women is at risk to be violated by a transgendered person using the same bathroom.

(10,852 posts)self-righteous. This is what it produced...
The 10 Commandments of the Religious Self-Righteous might reflect the attitudes and behaviors of someone who, in their view, upholds moral or spiritual superiority over others. These principles would emphasize judgment, exclusivity, and a sense of moral high ground. However, its important to note that this concept is often criticized for lacking true humility or compassion, which are core virtues in most religious traditions. Below is a satirical take on what such "commandments" might look like, often highlighting hypocrisy or intolerance:
10 Commandments of the Religious Self-Righteous
1. Thou shalt judge others according to thy standards.
Place yourself as the ultimate arbiter of what is right and wrong, judging others based on your personal interpretation of faith.
2. Thou shalt look down upon those who do not share thy beliefs.
View those who hold different beliefs or lifestyles as inferior, and consider them in need of correction or salvation.
3. Thou shalt boast of thy piety and righteousness.
Constantly remind others of your virtuous actions, and take pride in your perceived holiness or moral superiority.
4. Thou shalt condemn sin wherever it may be found.
Focus on identifying and condemning the faults of others, whether large or small, and make sure everyone knows what is "wrong" in their behavior.
5. Thou shalt follow the rules to the letter, but not in spirit.
Adhere rigidly to religious rules, rituals, or dogmas, but overlook the deeper, more compassionate principles of your faith.
6. Thou shalt hide thy imperfections from others.
Conceal your own flaws and mistakes, presenting an image of perfect moral conduct while ignoring your own shortcomings.
7. Thou shalt ignore the humanity of others in favor of doctrine.
Prioritize doctrinal purity over empathy, ignoring the personal struggles or needs of others in favor of adhering to religious law.
8. Thou shalt feel superior in the name of the Divine.
Use your faith to elevate yourself above others, claiming that your adherence to religious principles makes you better or more deserving.
9. Thou shalt exclude those who do not conform.
Keep distance from those whose beliefs, lifestyles, or identities do not align with your narrow interpretation of religion or morality.
10. Thou shalt teach others to follow thy path, and none other.
Make it your mission to convert or influence others to adopt your way of thinking, ensuring that they conform to your view of righteousness.
These "commandments" caricature a self-righteous attitude that can often lead to judgmental and exclusionary behavior, lacking true compassion or understanding of others' experiences. In contrast, most religious teachings emphasize humility, empathy, and the understanding that no one is without flaw or imperfection.

(603 posts)Many of the religious right do not critically think.
Unfortunately, I have many family members that are MAGA.
They accept anything he says as 'Gospel'.
All they have to do is take any speech by Trump and compare it to Christ's sayings in the Gospels.
The contradiction is clear.
Or Apostle Paul:
Love is patient, Love is kind. Love is not boastful or envious or arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1st Corinthians 13: 4-7 (Not 1 Corinthians 13:4-6)
Trump is impatient
Trump is unkind
Trump boasts
Trump envies the success of others
Trump is arrogant
Trump is rude
Trump's way or the highway
Trump is resentful
Trump rejoices in causes pain of others

(14,300 posts)The main reason egg prices shot up was a highly transmissible and fatal strain of avian influenza, or bird flu.
MAGA voters have absolutely no grasp of what caused the rise in egg prices. They just heard from FOX that it must be Biden's fault.
Oh, and I think we can expect Trump to cut the budget for the USDA, so expect that situation to worsen.

(41 posts)What the man called Christ taught was a good way for us all to live this experience called life, and it's rooted in spirituality. Book religions are what power drunk men wage war about. If we're able to come out the other side of this mess the world is in, it would be truly amazing if people could learn to speak the language of the heart and leave all those foolish (and deadly) games in the rearview.
The game of money is the problem. What it is and what it means. Man's religion has been overtaken by people motivated by money, but they will swear to the grave that their mansions, designer clothes and private jets, were God's wish. There is so much deception out there, most people practicing it at that level have even deceived themselves.
This virus of deception (and now with augmented ai reality) is spreading far and wide, and the groundwork foundation it has been built upon is aggression and dominance. Its core belief is the worship of power; the power that is wielded in this material realm, if that feels coherent or relevant to you.
The Maga movement are mostly the uneducated working class, and they have been taken advantage of by these slick pastors that preach fear, hate and shame. They ply emotionally coercive methods to milk tithes that simply do not function as "God's work". They may do just enough to have records of this or that, but the sole purpose and agenda is hidden behind the curtain (and offshore accounts).
This is about the human experience and how fallible we can be, or how prone we are to temptation beyond the cusp of reason, and I'll jump forward right here and now to say that I believe the internet has magnified mankind's worst tendencies. In fact, I'll say that the internet has been weaponized and is being used to that effect.
Pardon me, I just have so much to get off my chest.
