The Israeli prime minister and former defence minister are accused of "the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts".
All 124 members of the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC, are now compelled to arrest the two Israelis and hand them over to the court.

(2,177 posts)An international treaty with no real enforcement mechanism means the obligation to arrest is more a strong suggestion vs an actual obligation.

(1,305 posts)The Brits arrested Pinochet (who was a small timer compared to Bibi, Gallant, and the Hamas leaders).
Trump's pal Putin also has an ICC warrant out on him.

(1,305 posts)crimes against humanity. Few of the people indicted by the ICC for war crimes or crimes against humanity have been dictators.

The US has not recognized or ratified the ICC. Under any administration.

(6,708 posts)Not only did they not arrest him, they gave him the royal red carpet welcome. No one is going to arrest a leader of another country when they have a nuclear arsenal.

(2,981 posts)The ICC also issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu's now sacked defence minister Yoav Gallant, and a Hamas commander, Mohammed Deif, who Israel says was killed in July.
Judges said there were reasonable grounds to believe the three men bore "criminal responsibility" for crimes during the war between Israel and Hamas.
Europe and the US were split in their response to the warrant, with several European countries saying they respect ICC decisions. The British government indicated that Netanyahu faces arrest if he travels to the UK.
Biden said in a statement that "whatever the ICC might imply, there is no equivalence - none - between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security."

(1,305 posts)Ireland and The Netherlands say they well enforce warrants on the accused war criminals if they're dumb enough to show up in their countries. Germany says that it is undecided about it.
