Trump probably wanted Florida AG Pam Bondi from the beginning - she's cute, she adores President-for-Life Elect Trump, and she's one of the worst fascists Trump has put forward to date. Because of how far out of whack her leanings are he knew she wouldn't get in without help...so, throw an utter sex fiend's name into the hat then when he gets chased out of consideration bring in Bondi, whose sole desirable attribute seems to be "as far as we know, she hasn't committed any heinous sex crimes yet."

(14,300 posts)He could have gotten pretty much ANYONE through a GOP controlled Senate except Gaetz.
He spent a bucket load of political capital on nominating Gaetz. All of his appointments are horrible, but this one just pissed off even his allies there who were forced to go on record pretending that this was acceptable and normal. I think it also may have killed his plan to get them to go along with the recess appointment scheme.

(90,215 posts)...I don't understand this thinking that one corrupt nominee is supposed to be covering for the next one he appoints.
We can all see them. Bondi is mixed up with the Trump Foundation, and it's entirely probable she won't stand up to scrutiny, either.

Never will be.
Any Democrat claiming the inevitability of this needs to be doing something to try and prevent it, instead of just making as if republican senators and their criming cohorts are invincible.

(27,739 posts)Other than just the blanket assumption that republicans will reflexively support Trump - but there were two instant no vote republicans as soon as he was named and a dozen or more Republican huh???! responses.
Bondi is far more acceptable to these potential crossover votes that we absolutely need in order to defeat a nominee. Also - we have limited ammunition in this battle and much easier targets.
Yes - I think were being played and she was the pick all along.

(51,488 posts)Gaetz is Corrupt x 1.
Bondi is Corrupt x 2. If they kick her back, he'll be advancing more and more corrupt people until Trump advances Bob Odenkirk, who has no actual legal experience to speak of but played a corrupt lawyer on TV. And then if THAT doesn't work most of Fred Phelps' children are licensed attorneys, and he'll just get one of them.
If the Senate signs off on Bondi, though, it saves him the trouble of combing Bureau of Prisons records for incarcerated lawyers.

I can't help wondering if that was one of our "regulars" who repeatedly sign up, just to post something obnoxious and immediately get banned. If so, I'm sure MIRT will deal with them appropriately. 😁

(44,689 posts)First, having your first big nomination blow up isn't a good look for Trump.
Second, Bondi wouldn't have had any problem being confirmed if she had been put forward from the start.

(51,488 posts)Bondi has a Trump Foundation-related scandal in her past, where TSF's fake charity donated money to her campaigns. She also has at least vestigial ties to Scientology; still-wealthy Scientologists have made large donations to her campaigns and she's spoken at their events. Dig a little and you'll find enough dirt on her to plant wheat in.

In 2016, news emerged that Trump paid a $2,500 fine because his foundation improperly donated $25,000 to Bondis political election committee in 2013 before her office opted not to pursue a fraud investigation into Trump University. Trump eventually paid $25 million to settle fraud complaints against the now-defunct university.

He really wanted fellow pedophile Gaetz as AG.
DFW
(56,606 posts)Even Trump has all but admitted that he didnt think he could get away with it.
Not that I think any of these nominees are Trumps sole personal doing. Bannon, Miller, the usual Trump manipulators who put all the ideas and names in his mouth, these are the ones who are the origins of the nominees. Trump probably barely knew the difference between Matt Gaetz and Bill Gates, and would have been happy naming either one.
Mike Niendorff
(3,551 posts)First, they're still gunning for a "recess appointment" binge -- the Gaetz nomination gave them someone to sacrifice in pursuit of that. A little "give" to justify the "take". He was never intended to make it through, he was just a tool to be used in the broader project.
Second, he had become a liability, and they wanted him gone -- they needed him out of the House and they needed the House investigation buried. By convincing him to resign for a "promotion" (that he'd never get), they had a tool to both kill the ethics report and to eliminate him as a potential problem-child going forward.
