8. The No taxes on Overtime idea is to eliminate overtime pay

A judge has already struck down a Biden order that required overtime pay for millions of workers. Trump will try to abolish any requirement for paying overtime altogether.

Trump's no tax on tips proposal wouldn't benefit tipped workers. Two-thirds of restaurant workers who work for tips earn so little that they don't pay federal income taxes, per a new report parsing data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

https://www.axios.com/2024/07/25/trump-eliminate-taxes-tips-restaurant-workers-wages

Trump’s idea also would create many new opportunities to game the tax system, which inevitably would result in new IRS regulations aimed at curbing tax avoidance. And a tax-exemption for tips violates every rule of tax equity. Why should a service worker avoid tax on tips while a warehouse employee earning exactly the same income must pay tax on wages?

Perhaps more important, repealing taxes on tips also could take the steam out of efforts to raise the cash minimum wage for tipped workers. Eight states and the District of Columbia have started to equalize the minimum wage for all workers. Five more are considering it. But the lure of tax-free income could turn many workers against the shift from tips to wages.

Losing the opportunity to receive a more generous minimum wage would hurt service workers at lower-end restaurants, where tip income is relatively low. The hardest hit may be “back of the house” staff such as dish washers, who often receive only a small share of tips, enough to qualify as tipped workers but not enough to live on, or to pay taxes.

Another issue: While Trump said he’d repeal taxes on tipped workers, he never said which taxes. Does he mean just the federal income tax? Or does he mean Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes as well? Many low-wage workers pay more in payroll tax than in income tax, but in return for payroll tax, they get the critical Social Security and Medicare benefits. But no tax payments, no benefits.

16. I'm sure the workers who fell for it thought he was talking about payroll tax. They don't make enough to pay income tax

How much tax you pay depends on how much you make, it’s pretty simple. I’ve always thought people complaining about taxes were bragging about their high income. Other than the rabid Republican politicians who want to eliminate all taxes because they want to eliminate the US government

You can't tax something that does not exist. Destroy social security and voila! No tax on it.

So he will 'keep' the promise of no tax on tips and no tax on social security or overtime because there will be no income tax only a tariff at the border.

The people who thought that was something that was going to benefit them and voted for Trump are in for a hard lesson that the oligarchs aren’t interested in throwing them any crumbs.

could be for the workers, but more likely the business owner benefits. The employer doesn’t have to match the social security and Medicare contributions.

even if they won't be taxed. No reports means that owners can pocket the tips.
