November 22, 1963.

It was early in the morning at my California college in Freshman year. I was coming down from my dorm room to go to my first class, a Biology 101 class in a large classroom. As I walked past the dorm TV lounge, they were just announcing that JFK had been shot. I watched, dumbstruck, for a few minutes and then hurried to the classroom. I walked in, interrupted the professor, and announced the news to the 100+ other freshmen in the room.

"Class dismissed!" Everyone found a TV set somewhere to watch. and watch we did, as the story unfolded and history changed.

An unforgettable day in my life.

It was lunch recess, a gorgeous Colorado day, when all the teachers came out of the building, most of them crying. We gathered round & they told us what happened. The violence of it shocked me to the core. Even though I knew our country had had assassinations before, it seemed to me we were past that. Five years later, Martin & Bobby.

It kicked off an era.

Some of us gathered in the auditorium and watched on a tiny tv set. I don't remember if school was dismissed that day or not.

All the girls in class started crying. They sent us home early. The school is now named the John F. Kennedy Memorial Middle School.
