which I must know in the work I do, here are two reputable sources I found in a brief search for authorship. Evidently, this is from 2017, but it is still GREAT advice we should all take to heart. It has been attributed to Bernice King, but she has never claimed to be the author.
The first is from Ebony. It has some additional words from John Lennon that I liked:
Keep demonstrations peaceful. In the words of John Lennon, When it gets down to having to use violence, then you are playing the systems game. The establishment will irritate you pull your beard, flick your face to make you fight! Because once theyve got you violent, then they know how to handle you. The only thing they dont know how to handle is non-violence and humor.
The second source is the Washington Post (yeah, I know... but this was in 2017).
Thank you so much for finding this and sharing it with us, California Peggy! I love it, and it is even more relevant now than it was in 2017. It is advice we all need to take to heart, regardless of where it originated. (But I thought I should at least share what I learned when I looked for confirmation of its origin.) Thank you, thank you, thank you!

(9,739 posts)Which makes this all the more tragic. We pretty much followed that advice. They came back more radical, hateful and lawless - with blessings of SCOTUS.
I'm waiting on the next Winston Churchill or FDR. a leader who is eloquent and experienced in the machinations of Fascists. (A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.)

(4,914 posts)I don't think anyone else here did, either. And I don't think we did a very good job of numbers 3, 4, 5, or 6. We didn't follow it and fail. We can do better. And it IS still good advice.
But the last thing on earth I wanted to do was make any DUer feel worse. So, I'm sorry. Maybe I need to just go back to keeping my thoughts to myself.
Think. Again.

(9,739 posts)As I read it sounded so familiar. I didn't actually see this list, but everything on it was imparted in various ways. Calling him 45 and not referencing him by his name sounds very Harry Potter. He is so much worse than what this was trying deal with. And he's back. Very Harry Potter.

The link made me sad for all of the perfecting we could have achieved everywhere if we won the last information battle.
Nonetheless, it also made my heart sing because as Winston Churchill might have said
America always does the right thing after exhausting every other possibility and this time most of the right things are being born and nurtured in our golden state.

(17,788 posts)I also don't waste time insulting him. Nor do I make much of the stupidity and ignorance of his followers, concentrating rather on their cowardice and incompetence. The latter is something that will be very important in the next few years. We should remember that there is a large gap between bragging about all the things you're going to do, and actually executing those plans.

Both are a good way to normalize how extreme the MAGA Party is

(1,951 posts)vulnerable to conscience or shame feel responsible for their actions. Lets be clear that MAGAs are a lost cause, Republicans only if they call themselves MAGAs. Let's leave some breathing room for the 3 or 4 Republicans we need to vote againsth things like SS, arresting "enemies", confirming nominees without background checks, people who think there might be another election and fear voters as well as Trump.
These are people we want to both win over and shame. Let's call it for what it is. The Republican Party is doing this. The JAGAs are a cult, not a party.
uponit7771
(91,997 posts)... MAGA party votes.
Republicans voted 94% for Trump in 20 and 94% in 24 ... even after a campaign by sane GOP, Trumps 20 hot garbage and his horrid econ plans Republican votes did not budge.
Going after people who wont vote for a dem after 24 is a fools errand at this point, label them as the dark force and gather more democrats for 26 and 28
MadameButterfly
(1,951 posts)I'm talking about members of Congress. If the goal of the OP is to make Republicans take responsibility, make it clear it's Republicans, not some faction or extreme wing of the party. All of them are responsible for what they've done and what they do.
Because the handful in Congress who might vote to keep Social Security might not identify as MAGA.

(52,357 posts)due to a lifetime of BS stolen elections since I was able to vote in 1980...Raygun, Bush 1 and 2, and tRump.
As a teacher from 1997-2013 I never taught my students about current GOP POTUSes. I also never hung their photos in my classroom and when I saw them hanging in the offices I almost puked each time.
On "Presidents' Day" I never mentioned who the current POTUS was and I only would teach about Washington and Lincoln. I guess I did "selective teaching" to my 1st graders.
I only write his name as "tRump" as well.

(80 posts).... there are a decent number of parallels to Voldemort, aka Moldy Voldy, aka He Who Must Not Be Named. The big difference is that the advice to not use his name isn't borne of fear but of loathing, which I can get behind. Otherwise, Dumbledore has the run of it: Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself. And now that I think about it more, the similarities are stronger down to the existence of a Grindelwald in our midst, too, but that's more Harry Potter than I am comfortable with tonight.

(3,847 posts)They were most responsible for this senseless outcome. She should have a symposium with all of the public leaders that squawked about sitting on the sidelines. If they don't engage, she should name names. Many are in the late 30s and 40s so they will be interfering again in 2 and then 4 years. This needs to be dealt with. I saw their sickening bullshit on TT.
