I apologize, to the DU community.
Last Thursday, I was contacted by my Doc.
It's confirmed, I have prostate cancer.
I've been going through some emotions.
Im sorry, if I offended anyone.

(17,224 posts)Seriously medical advancements have been made to help get this issue behind you.
You need to maintain a positive attitude - it is the powerhouse that governs + guides the healing process.
Allowing yourself to get distraught or down in the dumps is very counter productive to fighting off cancer cell growth.

(7,095 posts)I then had 36 True Beam radiation treatments.
I get regular PSA blood tests every 3-6 months.
The highest it has been post-treatment is 0.79
There is now a prostate cancer-specific PET scan.
THAT pinpoints to any active cancer cell. Scan the top of the skull to mid-thigh.
This is what my doctor told me..... read it carefully.
You will die with prostate cancer. You will NOT die of prostate cancer.
Find a good prostate cancer team. That specializes in treating prostate cancer.
I am 77. I was 69 when I was diagnosed.
I am not a doctor, but I have been where you are, and everything I have read leads me to believe this.
You will die with prostate cancer. You will NOT die of prostate cancer.
Message me if you want clarification of any of the above.

(4,088 posts)I was diagnosed with prostate cancer over 10 years ago. My Doctor and I decided to use "active surveillance", with an exam and PSA blood test every six months. When the PSA finally got to 10, he told me it was time to do something. I elected direct beam radiation, a course of 5 days per week for 9 weeks. I had no side effects, other than showing up 5 days a week and not getting paid for it.
It's been 3 years since the radiation treatment. I still get checked every 6 months and my most recent PSA was 0.56. So far, so good, and I'm still surfing at 77, but every one is different and the age you're first diagnosed is a factor on electing between surgery or radiation. Listen to your doctor.
If you have any questions, you know how to get in touch.
Good luck and best wishes.

(317 posts)Last summer I too was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had my prostate removed in the Fall of 2023. My last PSA test a month ago indicates I am non detectable for cancer cells.
You will have many choices, surgery, radiation and it will be very confusing. Read the literature and ask questions, none are stupid questions. There are many groups that you can talk to about your concerns and questions.
Your prognosis is very good with today's surgery and radiation treatments. We are all thinking of you and wish you the best of all outcomes.

(979 posts)I've Been There. The same thing.
The urologist was going to take a 'wait and see' approach until I mentioned that I'd lost an uncle to it. He said "We'll schedule a biopsy". It came back with a Gleeson 2.5.
IMRT (Image Modulated Radiation Therapy) for 9 weeks, 5 days a week. It took about 3 years for the PSA to hit 0.1.
We caught it early enough. Talking with a cousin, the daughter of the aforementioned uncle, and he had a VERY bad time of it.
The medical technology has progressed very rapidly over the last decades, and a LOT of stuff that would kill you is now quite survivable.
But the Diagnosis is still a psychological gut punch. There's a support group here on DU for cancer. It can help.
You aren't alone.

(24,494 posts)Having such a prognosis isn't one that anyone wants to hear. In my case, my great uncle had it, and came through w/ flying colors. He's been gone for some time, my favorite uncle, and I worshipped the ground he walked on (we both did). He passed on, not from the cancer, but from old age, in his upper 80s...his wife is still going strong.
My best to you and your loved ones.

I'm sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. Sending healing vibes and hugs your way. 🤗
My husband has been living with Stage 4 prostate cancer for over five years. Treatments have improved significantly in the last ten years. My best advice would be to get treatment from a good medical oncologist (not a general practitioner or urologist), preferably one who specializes in genitourinary cancers and preferably at a large hospital. You clearly dont have Stage 4 (PC with remote metastasis, which is incurable); the outlook for you should be excellent.

Diagnosed at age 49. Got a voicemail while pumping gas, great bedside manner. It took 2 years after my radical robotic prostatectomy to get back to normal but I am doing well now. I joined Sam's club so a month's supply of Sildenafil wasn't $600 and I didn't need it after about a year and a half. Best of luck.

(6,485 posts)The treatments are great now, you can beat this, my father did but had some damage because he got the worse kind of radiation. At the time the proton beam was just out and he should have got that instead. But still he survived it. Get a good doc(s)/oncologist, and hospital who have the best treatments.
