And does he have any idea how much produce we import from Mexico?
wnylib
(25,190 posts)land for it, there's indoor gardening in any home or apartment. Might have to do our own pollinating of plants, but there are instructions and videos online.
We import lettuce, tomatoes, and many other produce items from Mexico and South America.
Also, as he expands his tariffs, consider spices from Asia, Mexico, and South America. Chili powder, ginger, cinnamon, cilantro, etc.
This will hurt grocery stores, especially smaller, family owned ones. And restaurants, who will pass the cost on to customers.
If people thought food prices were high under Biden, wait until they see what Republican prices are under #45.

(614 posts)We import produce through the winter and spring as the growing season in Mexico is different than the USA.
wnylib
(25,190 posts)summer produce to have in winter. I already do that to some extent. Buy vegetables and fruits from local farmer's market and freeze them. Easier and quicker than canning.
zeusdogmom
(1,077 posts)But SO much easier said than done. Equipment for canning and growing indoors can be $$$. Farmers markets are not everywhere, often expensive, and you need transportation if you are buying food preservation amount. Then there is the matter of space for setting up a grow system and storage space for equipment. And a freezer if you are not canning. This also does not address the amount of time it takes.
wnylib
(25,190 posts)where the farmer's market is held. There is an Amish family that has a large booth there every year. Their prices are lower than the others so I usually buy from them.
I just use the freezer top of my refrigerator for storing what I freeze. I do not do canning. Don't know how or have the equipment for it.
When I was a child, my father was out of work for several months due to a car accident. When he got back to work, there was a recession and his hours were cut to 2 or 3 days a week.
He started a garden in the yard that produced a large amount of nearly every vegetable. He had grown up on a farm, so he was familiar with growing seasons and amount of space needed for various plants. He planned the garden so that he could grow some vegetables in between others, making use of every inch.
My great aunt lived with us. She and my mother canned everything that they could and froze the rest, except for things like lettuce and onions. We had a peach tree on the property line so that half of the peaches were in our yard and half in the neighbor's. It was a very productive tree, so we had canned peaches, too.
Our family did that for a few years while recovering financially.

(16,251 posts)I garden and can (water bath and pressure can) and it was a long process of figure stuff out. I’m still not utilizing all my yard in the way I’d like, but each year it’s better.
I am growing micro tomatoes indoors this winter. I started some last winter and had production up until spring. This time I’m growing just two micro tomatoes plants and one cucumber plant. All three are in pots that sit near my large south facing living room window. They get enough sun there that I don’t need to supplement with grow lights. I could add more, but I’m still in the “let’s see how this works” phase. If needed, I could scale up to way more pots. (I’m growing a micro San marzano, a micro Jip and Jannke and a quick snack patio cuke).
It’s a heck of a time commitment to figure out what will thrive in my garden. I grew rampicante squash for the first time this year. They’re pretty big (long) squash that stores in normal household temps for almost a year. I also picked up a sweet meat squash from a farm stand - a variety I grew a few years ago but didn’t this year. I wanted to see how it canned, and was quite shocked at how many pints of cubed squash I got out of one squash. So do I grow rampicante - tastes like butternut- and just store them and use them as I need, or do I grow some sweet meat too and can it because it’s fabulous in pumpkin pies and breads? Can dedicate time and space to grow and process both?
Longer term, I’d like to produce enough pickling cukes on site to not have to supplement from the farm stand. Can I extend that to growing the contents of the pickling spices too? I use red pepper flakes in the pickles; how many cayenne peppers do I need to grow to dry and use for pickles and for all other uses? It comes down to how much space do I dedicate to cayennes vs fireball peppers, because I have to have fireball hot sauce to go with my hens’ eggs.
I mean, I’m not bored. But I am going down rabbit holes to figure out how to grow more, how to keep more (preserve or not) and make sure that I know how to save seeds to have more for next year. I don’t mind the hobby/urban homestead, but I don’t want to actually be forced into figuring all of this out! I still work 40 hours a week.

(1,354 posts)A dozen Grade A large eggs, 1.53. Half what it used to be, around here, five years ago. I haven't seen grocery prices going up much, but eating out? Wow. They're really getting you there. My mother always wants to eat when we go out, but I resist because one, it's bad for me, and two, I can't stand seeing how much stuff costs, at any fast food place. From commercials, I see regular restaurants are outrageous.
I think gas was 1.83 or something at most places. I consider that very low, and it's sticking around. I'd guess fuel oil prices will go up for winter, but otherwise, reasonable.
I highly doubt we'll be seeing prices like this six months from now. I don't know what we'll do, oldest son and I are still living together, neither can afford to do it alone. I hope he keeps his job, because we'd be sunk without it (he works at Walmart). Thankfully, crappy mobile home and the land it sits on are paid for, we just need to pay taxes and electric bill.

And this is what 49.9% of Americans voted for? Such fools, as they just shot themselves in the foot and are taking the rest of us down with them. Just think of the negative impacts on the supply chains as well -- and the reinflation this will cause.
At least he has backed off from his 60% tariffs on goods from China and now it will "only" be 10%.

Trump promises a 25% tariff on products from Mexico, Canada
Reuters
Mon, November 25, 2024 at 6:50 PM EST
1 min read
(Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday he would sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all products coming in to the United States from Mexico and Canada.
"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border illegally.

(4,893 posts)According to the United States Census Bureau, trade with Mexico totaled an estimated $863.4 billion in 2022. Imports made up $500.7 billion of that amount. Mexico was the United States' second-largest supplier of imported goods in 2022. In comparison, total trade with Canada that year was $914.3 billion, with $487.7 billion in imports.
Vehicles and Parts
At $130.9 billion, cars or car parts were more than one-quarter of all goods coming into the U.S. from Mexico in 2022. Most of the cars and car parts that the U.S. imports from Mexico are made by American automakers and intended for the U.S. market, even though they are manufactured in Mexico.
After NAFTA, many North American companies built supply chains that stretch across Mexico, the United States, and Canada; not only would tariffs hurt the American consumer, but it was predicted that retaliation from the Mexican government would damage the U.S. economy in the form of new trade barriers.
What Imports Does the U.S. Get From Mexico?
The U.S. imports machinery, vehicles, beverages, medical equipment, instruments, and much more from Mexico.
What Is the Biggest Import From Mexico?
Mexico exports more vehicles and parts to the U.S. than any other item.

Went ahead and ordered the matching washer, too, as that machine has been intermittently temperamental, and it’s the same age as the dryer. Sometimes the little push buttons require multiple pushes before the machine turns, or need to be held in for a long time with great force - that’s hard on my fingertips, so I use the blunt end of a chopstick to apply sufficient pressure. We’ve had it looked at least twice, and the repair guys can never reproduce the malfunction.

LogDog75
(320 posts)If he does impose tariffs, not only will prices of imported items increase but so will the cost in state and/or sales taxes. Think about it, whatever the increase in the price of imported item is it will require sellers to increase their prices to the consumer. So the increased price the consumer pays will be subjected to state and/or city sales. For example, if an item cost $20 and the sales tax is 7%, the amount of tax you'd pay would be $1.40. With a 25% tariff, that $20 item now costs $5 making it $25. The 7% sales tax on $25 would be $1.75 or 35 cents more. So not only is his tariffs increasing the price but he is in fact raising your taxes.
Yeah, I'm sure the MAGaTs thought it through that imposing tariffs results in raising the price of items and increasing the amount they'll have to pay in sales tax is why they voted for him.
