Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito likely to retire within 12 months

Yes or no?

I'd say Thomas is a definite, and they will do that in Year 1 to mark it as an accomplishment. Alito is a maybe, but if he goes, he will go before midterms. I think he knows he's grown a bit long in the tooth, and may just want to retire to his LBI summer joint with his kookoo bananas moglie.

I'd say the opposite. I think Thomas intends to die on the bench. tritsofme Nov 26 #1
Thomas will take a sinecure pay-off from Harlan Crow to go die elsewhere Prairie Gates Nov 26 #2
Perhaps, but I just don't see it. He'll linger until his final day. tritsofme Nov 26 #3
I agree with you. Nt leftieNanner Nov 26 #4
Republicans need to replace him when they control Senate and presidency - they'll make it worth his while muriel_volestrangler Nov 26 #10
That's certainly conventional wisdom, and could well turn out to be right. tritsofme Nov 26 #16
That's a tough one. I think summer of 2026. Buckeyeblue Nov 26 #5

Alito retiring in June 2025 after writing some terrible opinion would not surprise me.

Board of Directors, no show speech stipends, and the like. He'll be corrupt as the day is long til he dies, that's for sure.

They could appoint both him and Ginny to lucrative (and even powerful) positions. They just need the lifetime appointment in the hands of a reliable but young Republican vote.

He wouldn’t be refusing to retire out of some principle, but because he is stubborn and a troll.

If any of the current GOP justices refuse to strategically retire, I would bet on him.

That gives them two more terms to get their names on more shitty rulings. Also, no one kisses your ass when you're a retired SC justice. So it could go on.

Its pretty apparent that there are some cases both would like to write decisions on that haven't made it to them yet. My guess is they hold out until the 2026, then assess that summer. If the gop is looking like they have a chance to lose the Senate, then they will retire. If not, then they may continue on till 2028. Unfortunately for us, the 2026 Senate map isn't great.
