The vast majority of trump voters are not living in reality, they are members of a cult and the psychology of cult members doesn't allow them to see what their leader is actually doing.

All those things have already happened to them. They've lost loved ones in pointless wars so oil companies can profit. They went broke from lack of health insurance (till Obama passed the ACA, and they attacked him for it). They've seen jobs disappear, lost their homes to mortgage scams, watched as their local economies were ravaged by corporate greed. And they still voted for Trump.

I'm not sure what sort of apocalyptic disaster needs to occur before these people admit they're wrong.

There is a small margin that is fluid. Over time that can cause big political changes. But there are few if any grand events that lead to some kind of reckoning. That's just magical thinking. It's not going to happen. They already saw their relatives die in large numbers over COVID. It didn't move them. They weren't wrong: the world was wrong. They invented an alternative reality of COVID rather than be wrong. Such is it always. If you're waiting for a Great Awakening, you probably need one yourself. There's no magic moment. There's no realization. This isn't a novel. There's no resolution.
