A little background: President Yoon is very much like Trump. It is supposed that he was supported by foreign sources and the politics of S. Korea is very divided (sound familiar?). Yoon declared ML because he says the opposition party is being manipulated by N. Korea. I believe this is a trial run for Trump to declare ML here in the US and Trump will use this as a means to destroy the Democratic Party. Watch closely what happens in S. Korea. Similar things will happen here soon after Trump takes office.

(661 posts)Insurrection is certainly grounds for declaring it. He could have used it to round up the insurrectionists, including Trump.

(102,693 posts)The presidents martial law declaration must be reviewed by the cabinet, and once martial law is declared, the National Assembly must be notified of the decision.
If the National Assembly requests the lifting of martial law by a majority vote of its members, the president must comply.
The martial law commander has authority over all administrative and judicial matters and is appointed by the president on the recommendation of the defence minister among active-duty generals. The commander has the power to take actions related to arrests of persons, searches and seizures, speech and the press, and assembly.

190 of the 300 members were present (some having to climb fences since the police wouldn't let them in), and all 190 voted to block the imposition of martial law.

(19,175 posts)In that the US has a number of US Troops, Intelligence aircraft, Military aircraft, and a large Military Troop and Naval presence in South Korea, Okinawa, as well as Guam. This could put the Asian Pacific region in play.
With his MN Air National Guard Unit, my husband has been to South Korea twice. The US there is pivotal in keeping the South from invasion by the North, as well as a balancing act against Chinese and Russian Military aggression.

2) To prevent that, he declared martial law banning all political activity!
3) The Korean army came and closed off the parliament to prevent MPs to come in and vote!
4) Korean MPs climbed over the fence and made their way to the parliament, breaching the block!
5) The special forces tried to storm the parliament, to stop the political activity
6) The parliament was as able to vote, and they voted unanimously to lift the martial law and lift all restrictions!
7) The army not know what to do first, decided to abide by the parliament and left!
8) Martial law will remain in place in South Korea until the president issues a decree to lift it.
The president is constitutionally obliged to lift martial law after a decision by parliament.
9) The South Korean president is expected to be arrested and impeached, according to media reports.
-> The opposition and the people won, by sneaking into the parliament and voting!
