'High crime and taxes' push Texas lawmaker to propose bill that would dissolve city of Austin

https://abc13.com/city-of-austin-district-texas-legislature-legislative-session/12469021/

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- -snip-

If the bill gets passed, it would turn the city into the "district of Austin," meaning the local government would report any new actions directly to Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan.

" Elected officials in Austin have failed their city. Record high taxes and crime are pushing folks out of the city, and their San Francisco wannabe policies force the state to come over the top on legislation each session. 1/2

"I filed HB 714 & HJR 50 to create the district of Austin to give the elected representatives of the state of Texas an opportunity to better manage a capitol district, reduce taxes, enforce our laws, and defend Texas values." 2/2

— Rep. Jared Patterson (@JaredLPatterson) November 16, 2022

This isn't the first attempt made by Texas Republicans to push similar measures. Those propositions never passed.

The next legislative session is set to begin on Jan. 10.

... in the sixties and seventies when the population was 250,000 and the state and university was the driving economic engine, Austin was fun, rents were cheap, music was crazy good at the Armadillo, the original Threadgills, and a bunch of other places. Then came dot.com. Ruint everthang.

Ever seen an entire city yuppified all at one time? One year it was cheap and easy and the next year it moneyed over. And it's gotten worse. Much worse. It's the reason I live forty miles away and loathe driving in Austin.

I got there in time to see "Keep Austin Weird" become "Keep Austin 'Weird"'©™. What sad long trip it's been.

I couldn't afford it on $50G a year as a single custodial dad. I left after the girls went to college (St Edwards and Texas A&M).

Austin has devolved into one of the least cool parts of Texas, over the last few years. Books have been written about just how bad Austin sucks now, compared to the lovely community it used to be. I know whereof I speak: I grew up in Austin, and I have dozens of old friends who still live there---and hate it. The very last thing Austin needs at this point is a fascist shithead like Dan Patrick, making things infinitely worse with this cretinous legislative proposal.

She is aware of the problems for women in TX. She tells me that she could always fly back to MA if need be for any possible health event where her life or well being is in any danger. As a 3rd generation Texan who left the state for good when I went off to college I was fearful for her health and well being. Fortunately, her parents are well off and can help her if the need arises. That comforts me.

as I understand it.

They set their own taxes, right?
It’s the state capital and home to the flagship state university - yeah there’s going to be crime.
