Axios: Scoop: Pelosi backing "some" House Dem committee ousters

Axios - Scoop: Pelosi backing "some" House Dem committee ousters

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told Axios on Wednesday that she is supporting "some" insurgent efforts by House Democrats to topple older committee ranking members.

Why it matters: Pelosi encouraged Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) to challenge House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), Axios previously reported.

-That culminated in Nadler's withdrawal from the race on Wednesday.

What she's saying: Asked about Nadler's withdrawal in a brief interview at the Capitol, Pelosi, who was holding a copy of Nadler's letter announcing his withdrawal, told Axios, "I just got his letter, I haven't finished reading it."

-"But he knows the territory. He's been a great leader and he's greatly appreciated. And now he's made a decision which we respect," she said.

-Asked whether she is supporting challenges to sitting ranking members, Pelosi said "some," adding, "I don't know all of them."

Both in public and in private (e.g. over the summer) undercut that message and overshadow him. It seems like she’s pulling all the strings.

The caucus is nervous and they want proven fighters in ranking positions.

“The caucus will guide these kinds of discussions,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, the No. 3 House Democrat. “We’re confident that at this time it’s going to take a Democratic Caucus that’s firing on all cylinders to push back against extremism and to make sure we can carry forward the bipartisan principles that we’ve talked about.”

“The caucus wants to make sure the right folks are leading these committees,” he added.

“I’ll let the challenges speak for themselves,” Jeffries said Tuesday evening when asked about the contests.
