(8,652 posts)I've certainly been critical of you in the past. Your partnership with RT was, I think you'd have to admit, a terible idea. But I look forward to watching you fight the fascists.

(10,023 posts)That was on RT is not our friend. Sorry but that's just reality. RT is a pure Putin propaganda arm.

(107,469 posts)as a starting point and its "failure to thrive" so to speak against Limbaugh and other RW media then I think you'd appreciate the economic realities a couple of decades ago. RT was not considered as overtly in the PUTIN stable as now--nor was Kaspersky. I don't listen to Hartman much because I am just too busy, but I think he got out as soon as he possibly could find alternate funding.
The old documentary featuring Randi Rhodes, Rachel Maddow, Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo, Marc Maron, and others is a good place to start--even if you are aware of all of this:

When those ties were questioned, Kaspersky was no longer allowed on government computers, albeit it was not banned. Yet, most new computer manufacturers stopped installing it. Now, we look askance at it because of the potential ties to the Kremlin--just as we do RT, albeit that was not the case 20+ years ago.

(198 posts)Kaspersky is the founder. The company was recently blocked in the US over fears it was working with the Russian government.

Thom insisted on complete editorial independence during his time on RT. As long as RT gave him complete independence, Thom used it as another outlet to broadcast his excellent JOURNALISM.

It's funny how the people we don't like that leverage RT are bad, like Tulsi Gabbard but people we like on Russian propaganda websites are fine.
We either draw a line or we don't. Democrats need to stop being so squishy and declare a set of values and stick to them. If we should have learned anything in this last election is that, as a general rule of thumb, the American people are ignorant and they don't do nuance.

RT has given a platform to many left wing and progressive journalists who have all said RT never censored their views in any way and they were free to run their own shows as they wished.

(1,542 posts)Why is a story about how bad health insurance was 35 years ago relevant to the story of an assassination of a 50 year old insurance executive today?
Democrats actually fixed major problems with health insurance with the ACA and they get no credit for it, not in the public opinion, and certainly not at the ballot box. In fact, the passage of the ACA was heavily punished at the ballot box and greatly enabled the republican takeover of our national politics, in part due to 2010 statehouse wipeouts and the extreme redistricting that resulted.
The amount of stories I hear about "pre-existing condition" denials today, as if they're still a fundamental characteristic of health insurance, demonstrates the failure of Hartmann, who presumably cares about healthcare and informing his audience, in his job as a commentator.

(1,542 posts)Some big achievements of the ACA:
1. No more pre-existing conditions exclusions (the bit that's most relevant to this thread)
2. No more lifetime limits on essential health services
3. Expanded medicaid, allowing millions more people to qualify for medicaid
If you don't think the ACA has made a difference it's probably because of 1., you don't have a pre-existing condition that would have denied you coverage under the old system or 3., you don't know anybody that's poor with no dependent children that is now getting medicaid.

(10,364 posts)Second of all shitty insurance with a 7 grand deductible might as well be no insurance for most of us
I have several relatives on Medicaid, its awful, their doctors have to fight repeatedly for any necessary procedure and anesthesia is being charged, ahead separately at least for some procedures
Right now I have a daughter whos doctor is fighting to do a colonoscopy because they know shes full of polyps and shes already a cancer survivor but so far, denied

(11,605 posts)At first, Dems just ran away from ACA as if it were kryptonite. But then they embraced the Obama care label.
Today we know what an improvement it was. But it wasn't single payer or nationalized healthcare. It was just another compromise back then.
Yeah a third of the country was fighting tooth and nail against it. But most Americans thought we would get a form of nationalized healthcare. I think Hillary would have gotten it for us. Obama was ever the compromiser. Not so much Hillary.
That was what Americans really wanted and kind of expected from the "liberal" Democrats. It's what Obama and Hillary campaigned on. A nationwide single payer system like Medicare for all. But they didn't get it. And that disappointment translated into rejection of the Dems ACA.
It's easy for Repukes to win. They have the filthy-rich on their side all the time. They buy, buy, buy buy up everything from propaganda stations, to the police unions, to right wing talking heads, to judges. They buy gerrymandering and voter suppression tools. Money is the life blood of capitalism and Repukes know they can buy most anything in this out of control capitalist economy.
But not Dems. When Dems win, it's to do something. America votes in Dems to make important social changes: Like FDR and the new deal, Like JFK and civil rights, like Carter and the Dept of Education and stronger Social Security and unfortunately, like Clinton and free trade.
