DNA identified AZ firefighter Abraham Pedrego as violent serial rapist. statute of limitation has expired.

Despite the DNA link, he has not yet been charged. That’s because the statute of limitations has expired.

“He’s a serial offender and I can’t arrest him and get him off the streets. It’s very alarming,” Young said.

Through an investigation, 13 News found out Abraham Pedrego is the man whose DNA is connected to these cases.

On Oct. 13, 2024, 13 News reached out to the South Tucson Fire Department and the Tucson Airport Fire Department after finding out he was employed as a firefighter.

That same day, we received a response from South Tucson officials, saying quote, “Abraham Pedrego was a part-time reserve firefighter with the city of South Tucson Fire Department. However, as of earlier today, he is no longer a part-time employee of the city of South Tucson.”

We asked if he was fired and if it was due to the TPD findings about his involvement in sexual assaults from years ago.

We were told, “Yes, he was let go and this was due to the TPD findings.”

The Tucson Airport Fire Department told 13 News, “Mr. Pedrego is on a paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an employment-related investigation.”

Five days later, we received another email from the airport saying, “Abraham Pedrego has resigned his position with the Tucson Airport Authority.”

On Nov. 14, 13 News received a tip that Pedrego was employed by the Picture Rocks Fire District. When we explained to them the DNA findings and after speaking with TPD, they immediately terminated his part-time employment.

------------------

“It’s pretty horrible. It’s frustrating, it makes me angry. I can’t really describe it beyond that,” said Young.

...Angry because no matter what the science shows or how much law enforcement believes someone may be guilty, the statute of limitations at the time of these crimes barred anything from being done after seven years.

I understand everyone’s anger and frustration with the circumstances, but we cannot allow calls for violence, “street justice,” or vigilantism. All such comments will be removed and may result in a ban

Warn his neighbors. If it was my daughter who had been raped I would expose him publicly. Ruin him.

Two women who were victims in the late 1980s and early 90s are bravely coming forward to talk about the traumatic events that changed their lives forever, and to express their frustration that is boiling over.

“It was the day before school started, and I was in my Tucson apartment and I woke up to a towel over my head. I remember I couldn’t see him, but I could hear him and I could see the knife and I could hear him. And he made me pull down my pants and he raped me. And he told me to just stay there and he left,” said one victim.

“I was about to die of suffocation, couldn’t breathe for quite a bit. And he put a knife to my stomach and said, ‘Stop fighting and don’t scream or I will kill you’ and he had his whole body on top of me so I couldn’t fight back because he was a lot stronger than me,” said another victim.

Many serial rapists evolve to become serial killers. Isn't it somewhat unusual for a serial-anything to just stop cold, unless they experience some life-altering event or are imprisoned for some other crime? At the very least, the FBI should interview him and find out why he stopped--information that could be useful in locating offenders like him, or stopping others.

Also, see where he lived prior to Tucson and look into any unsolved crimes whose statutes have not run.

I thought the #MeToo movement had ushered in some new legislation that removed the statute of limitations for sexual assault? Maybe that was in certain states...
