A high-profile violent crime typically sets social media abuzz with tips and theories from amateur internet sleuths, hunting for the alleged perpetrator.
But after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down in New York City this week without a primary suspect being identified, a rare occurrence happened in the thriving true-crime world: silence online from highly followed armchair detectives.
I have yet to see a single video thats pounding the drum of we have to find him, and that is unique, said Michael McWhorter, better known as TizzyEnt on TikTok, where he posts true crime and viral news content for his 6.7 million followers. And in other situations of some kind of blatant violence, I would absolutely be seeing that.
Were pretty apathetic towards that, Savannah Sparks, who has 1.3 million followers on her TikTok account where she tracks down and reveals the identities of people who do racist or seemingly criminal acts in viral videos said about helping to identify the shooter. She added that, rather than sleuthing, her community has concepts of thoughts and prayers. Its, you know, claim denied on my prayers there, referring to rote and unserious condolences. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/internet-sleuths-say-wont-help-find-unitedhealthcare-ceo-suspect-rcna183228

(10,625 posts)I don't really want on-line vigilantes involved in law enforcement. Besides very few non rich folks care about the fate of insurance company execs.
While I disapprove of murdering folks in public, I feel no personal urge to track down the killer. That's what NYPD and the FBI are for.

Not all open-source info users are vigilantes. And pretty soon, we'll need them more than ever.

(10,068 posts)They just dont think theres anything their victims can do about it.
But it turned out they were wrong, and they are furious that nobody gives a shit when one of THEM has to pay the ultimate price for their policies.
I care just as much about this murder as he cared about the thousands of suffering people he tormented and killed. I think thats fair.

(12,638 posts)I've long felt that it would take the murder of a prominent repuke / repukes to make them see the light on allowing at least basic gun control. Could this be that moment? (I'm not holding my breath.)
Demobrat
(10,068 posts)the Repuke rallying cry is always This is not the time to talk about gun control.
Is this the time? I guess well see, but I dont think so. This time the collateral damage is a rich man instead of a poor child, but collateral damage he still is.
The gun lobby will not tolerate a hit to their profits for him, or anyone else.

(11,248 posts)They are used to getting away with anything.......Just look at Senator Scott? down in Florida, who corruptly stole 1.3 Billion dollars of Tax payers money through false medicare billings? when he was CEO of some health care Corporation.....Not only was he not punished, the stupid Republican Voters down there rewarded him the office of U.S. Republican Senator.......a position he obviously demonstrated he was well qualified to fill.....

Regulatory bodies that ensure private insurance will always be profitable and provide little protection for patients
A gutted tort system that makes private legal action useless.
They built this to ensure we can't do anything about it.

The AARP did something a few years ago that was not friendly to seniors about Rx prices. It was ages ago, I forget the deets, but I dont think theyre really our loyal champions, frankly.

(10,068 posts)I chose it because my broker showed me that while premiums are comparable across companies at 65, UHC rates tend to be lower when you are much older. Of course things change. I will be watching carefully. You can switch between companies offering the same plan at open enrollment each year.

(72,174 posts)usually someone will. these companies have been sued/fined a million times. punishable by a fine means legal for a price. that price never exceeds the profits. and execs almost never go to jail, no matter the body count.
ppl generally r fine w that.

Evidently, more news is surfacing about other corruption accusations about the CEO.......The DOJ was about to open an investigation into his corporation, he learned about it, and trading on insider information, he immediately dumped 15 million of his own stock before the news was made public and the stock dropped........

It really is disappointing that DU software still doesn't allow most all image urls to display without often having to use other image posting sites for many images.
Also disappointing is that it doesn't automatically embed hyper-links and other formating.
It makes meticulous posting (something I strive to always do) a real pain in the arse.

also, do NOT use the 'link' button on DU to post pics
The DU link button is only to embed hyperlinks into text

(11,692 posts)In 2022, police cleared about half of the murders and nonnegligent manslaughters at a 52.3% clearance rate. This is part of a downward trend that began in the 1960s. In 1964 the homicide clearance rate was 83.7%.
As police got more violent, their efficiency declines. The clearance rate of other crimes is even worse. Aggravated assault is 41.4%, Rape is 26.1%, Robbery is 23.2% .
They are too busy bullying the average person, controlling traffic and protecting property for the filthy-rich. It's all part of turning government and police into Fascist tools. They are more into controlling the masses and keeping minorities in their place then solving crimes.
Do it yourself crime solving maybe our only recourse.
But I'm surprised the police haven't brought in their suspect yet. That's unusual for a filthy-rich person's death not to have been avenged yet by the police.
Think. Again.
