2 year old Fresno, California boy shoots and kills his 22 year old mom. gun belonged to boyfriend

https://abc7chicago.com/post/woman-accidentally-shot-killed-2-year-old-child-northeast-fresno-police-say/15630951/

FRESNO, Calif. -- Police now say a woman was killed by her 2-year-old child during an accidental shooting in northeast Fresno last week.

The Fresno Police Department has identified the victim as 22-year-old Jessinya Mina.

----------------
Police say Mina's toddler was able to reach an unsecured gun inside the apartment.

"The firearm was stored in a location where the toddler accessed the firearm, and at some point, in time, while handling that particular weapon, the toddler was able to manipulate the trigger, and it actually struck Mina as she was lying in bed," said Lt. Paul Cervantes with the Fresno Police Department.

When officers arrived at the apartment complex, Mina's 18-year-old boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez, was starting to take her to the hospital.

First responders then stepped in and took Mina to the hospital, where she later died.

In a statement to Action News, Mina's sister says Sanchez neglected Mina's requests not to keep a gun in the house.

Police say Sanchez was arrested and booked into the Fresno County jail that night for negligent storage of a firearm and felony child endangerment but has since bailed out, adding he has no criminal history.

gun. Was it on the floor? The mother is sleeping, yet the child manages to shoot her? Was she sleeping on the floor? What am I missing here? And, sadly, why on earth, when the fucking idiot boyfriend ignored her expressed wishes, and brought a gun into the home, did she not kick his rude, ignorant ass to the curb?

Sounds much more likely that he shot her and blamed it on the 2 year old. I really hope that was the case and they prove it. The kid will already be messed up enough growing up without a mom, I hope the poor kid doesn't have to also live with the guilt of having killed her.

However, I find it difficult to believe that the toddler shot his mama. And then the article doesn’t mention the type of gun that was used to kill Mina. But I think most guns are rather heavy, especially for a toddler, unless the toddler had help pulling the trigger.

I think the authorities should have kept boyfriend locked up. He’s the responsible (errr, irresponsible) person here!

Has a very light trigger pull, and they can be set lower if the owner desires.

It should be no lighter than 4 pounds, but there are idiots who set it lighter.

But that weight is deceiving. It is easy for even a 2 year old to pull a trigger when you add the weight of the gun against your finger.

Which requires you to move a lever to disengage it.

Most semi-auto pistols do not. The only safety they have is on the trigger itself and is only meant to keep the gun from firing if dropped or hit.

A simple lever safety would avoid many, many, accidental shootings.

Don't believe a 2 yr old can find, pick up, stand up (mother was IN a bed) and manipulate trigger and fire gun. Methinks boyfriend was more of a participant than child. The recoil should have caused SOME injury to the child, I would think.

Pulling back the hammer is required, though, which takes more effort. Glocks vary, from 3.5 to something like 11 lbs ("New York" trigger). Fired one with one of those heavy triggers, couldn't hit crap with it. Dry firing showed that the front sight jumped sideways upon release of the striker, so much force having to be applied to the trigger.

or under the seat or in the seat back pocket or something, and the toddler pulls it out and shoots her. Sperm donor nowhere around.

Toddlers are completely capable of shooting a pistol - it happens multiple times a year in this nation of negligent idiots.

Toddlers killing moms, toddlers killing siblings.

There are rarely substantial consequences (other than dead children and adults), and nothing will change. The story will repeat, over and over, as long as Americans are neglectful idiots who love guns.

And Americans will always be neglectful idiots who love guns.

A typical pistol only weighs a few pounds and triggers are not hard to pull. A mattress isn't going to stop a bullet so she could have been hit even if the gun was fired from under the bed.

That said, the boyfriend was the owner and responsible for the gun. In my book that means negligent homicide at the least.
