The well-regarded NIESR says America's economy 'risks massive Trump slump'
When reading that the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) says that Trump’s policies will lead to inflation, recession, and deficit increases, the critical thinker will ask, what the hell is NIESR? Is it a liberal think tank reflexively antagonistic to all things MAGA? It’s a fair question. The answer is no.
NIESR is an independent organization dedicated to understanding the effect of political policies on the economy. Its work has been published in the Guardian and the New Statesman. So you know it is well-regarded by the left. Its opinions have also appeared in the London Times and the Spectator. Ergo, it passes muster with the right.
Bearing that in mind, it is fair to say that it is guided by facts and is not trying to promote a political agenda. It is also, as the reader might have guessed from its media outlets, a British concern. Therefore it stands at a remove from the reason-blinding heat generated by the US’s partisan battles.
Adding to the organization’s independent cred, its research paper warning of the catastrophic effects of MAGA economics, Trumponomics 2.0: Lower Growth, Higher Inflation, was promoted by the Telegraph, a reactionary UK newspaper that doubles as a house organ for the UK’s Conservative Party. The headline of the Telegraph article, “America’s economy ‘risks massive Trump slump’” left no doubt as to the thrust of the piece.
