'Missouri introduces Donald Trump bill that lets people with felonies run for office.
A Republican state representative in Missouri has proposed legislation that would allow a person who has pleaded guilty to, or been convicted of, a felony to serve in public office and has named it, pointedly, after the president-elect.
The Donald J Trump Election Qualification Act, introduced by state representative Michael Davis, would repeal a 2015 local law that prevents a person with a felony from becoming a candidate in a local or state-wide election.
If passed, it would allow a person with a criminal record to run for office if otherwise qualified."

(1,201 posts)Eventually, when we get rid of the P25 nonsense (maybe sixty, seventy years from now), we might be able to rebuild something. But my guess is, the United States of America is bound for the history books. At best we'll fractured groups of states, most of them remnants of red states that cling together, but a complete nation, from sea to shining sea? Doubtful.
It makes me sad, but it is what it is. For the first time, I'm glad I didn't have more grandkids. I fear for my grandson, only 12 years old, but maybe my son and DIL will wise up and get out. I'd like to think all the boys would go, but I'm pretty sure that won't happen. It doesn't matter about me, I'm old, and I won't live long if I lose my benefits.

(1,489 posts)... enlighten me, because that's sure what "People with felonies should never have been disqualified" sounds like.

(48,490 posts)There should be no blanket law barring every citizen who has been convicted of a felony from holding office, voting, or serving on juries. If you want to disqualify them for cause on a case by case basis, then fine. Go through the process of showing why they should be disqualified from office, voting, or serving on a jury. But barring someone from those things when hes 60 just because he got caught with a gram over an ounce of weed when he was 20 is lazy, stupid, and wrong.
Theres got to be a point in time where you let someone be an ex-criminal. Otherwise, every felony carries a de facto life sentence.

(1,489 posts)... I have a convicted felon in my immediate family, but he is not what I would call fully rehabilitated, nor will he ever be, I fear. He's just hard-wired to choose a larcenous path to any goal, and I sure as hell wouldn't vote for him.
