The woman who falsely accused three former Duke University lacrosse players of raping her at a party nearly 20 years ago has admitted that she lied about the allegations.
Crystal Mangum, a former exotic dancer, made the confession during an appearance on the Lets Talk with Kat podcast, hosted by Katerena DePasquale, and asked the players she had accused Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans for forgiveness.
The episode, which was released on Wednesday, Dec. 11, according to the campus newspaper, the Duke Chronicle, was recorded on Nov. 13 at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women. Mangum is currently in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder of her then-boyfriend in 2013, per the outlet.
During the recording, Mangum stated that she doesnt have any regrets and everything happens to get everybody to the point where they are, its all to show Gods love and his forgiveness, before saying that she made up the allegations about being raped in 2006.
Ah the joy to live life without regrets even though you have ruined/taken lives. My belief is regret should be a component of forgiveness, but I am not her god or anyone else's.
Sympthsical
(10,402 posts)How the university, particularly the faculty, ganged up against them - and never apologized. Those people didn't feel like they answered to anybody. Then the DA tried to railroad the accused to the point he and the DNA lab conspired to withhold evidence that would exonerate them. Everyone broke into ideological camps. People usually very interested in how police and prosecutors wrongly accuse and convict someone went completely radio silent.
And long after it was proven false - and the DA was disbarred for how he tried to ruin those mens' lives - people continued to insist "Something must've happened!"
It was an object lesson in the dangers in seeing matters of crime and justice purely through a partisan or ideological lens.
Good thing people are more sensible and we've moved past that sort of thing. We would never determine guilt or innocence based on politics these days. That'd be gauche.

(14,789 posts)...powerful men feel entitled. But I've never been a fan of "Believe the woman!" You investigate and believe what the facts tell you. And if the facts aren't there, you back off.
