(17,379 posts)I ask because I had a long phone conversation with my mother and she doesn't believe that even people in her close circle fully grasp how bad and serious this is (except for this one couple who reside in northern California). Even though I know people who are frightened, who detest Trump and are miserable about what happened, I too don't believe they are really prepared for what is likely to come.
Maybe it is something that people will accept in increments---because it is so very hard to believe this is happening.

(18,362 posts)... Is what they call Donald J Trump in the Kremlin. The name fits, seeing the Foreign Minister of Russia standing behind then-pee-resident in the Oval Office. To anyone who cares about the United States and our Constitution, the image represents an accomplishment like when the US planted its flag on the moon.
And here's why:
Putin Is Banking On a Trump Win for His New World Order
Donald Trumps nickname in the Kremlin? The American Gorbachev. Officials believe his chaos will be the downfall of the US.

Idont know which moment in American history Donald Trump imagines when he says, Make America great again. He has never given a clear answer in any speech or interview. But I know exactly which moment Vladimir Putin imagines in his own vision for Russian greatness. It is February 1945, when Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill divided the world in Crimea.
Three months remained before the surrender of Nazi Germany, but it was clear that the Allies were winning. To determine what the world would look like after the defeat of the Third Reich, the US president, British prime minister, and Soviet leader went to the city of Yalta, a resort area in Crimea. Stalin achieved everything he wanted: He convinced his then allies that he should have his own sphere of influence, which included all of Eastern EuropePoland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, the former Czechoslovakia, and the former Yugoslavia. The leaders also devised the United Nations Security Council, on which they secured permanent member seats for their countries.

The fantasies of Kremlin strategists have developed like this: A new Yalta Conference with Putin and Trump might not necessarily take place in Crimea. For greater symbolism, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, roughly equidistant from Russia and the US, would be more suitable. My sources in Moscow, who wish to remain anonymous for security reasons, suggest that such a summit could look good on Fiji. The Pacific archipelago is conveniently equidistant from Russia and the US.
Putins entourage understands that despite his ambitions, he is not like Stalin in 1945, and todays Russia is no match for the Soviet Union. Therefore, the dreams of the current Kremlin inhabitants suggest that another participant in the new Big Three should be China, represented by Xi Jinping. They believe that the real Cold War is beginning between China and the US, so the upcoming Yalta: Fiji should formulate the rules of this confrontation. And Putin is ready to be content with the role of the third partner, a kind of modern-day Churchill. Of course, he wants to secure his place on the global board of directors that is the UN Security Council and expects to be allotted his sphere of influence: the countries of the former Soviet Union.

For them, Mikhail Gorbachev is not a democrat or a reformer. For former KGB officers, Gorbachev is a demagogue and a narcissist who desperately wanted to please the audience but had no plan of action; a president whose policies were so chaotic that the empire began to fall apart, with different parts declaring their independence. This is wishful thinking, but Putins inner circle would like to believe that Trump could become just such a president.

America's main adversary, Russia, helped Trump win in 2016, 2020 and, going just from the bots and billionaires on X, in 2024. Their aim is to destroy the United States of America. And to think We the People are turning over the reigns of power to Putin's tool without even raising a question about its morality, legality and logic that the thought of January 20, 2025 makes me sick.

(4,158 posts)Oligarchs will bleed the American Treasury for as much as they can safely, legally acquire.
Second - as people have mentioned, there will be a fire storm on American Departments as theyre declared unnecessary and the the Oligarchs will acquire the rights to perform that function.
Third - the family farms will disappear absorbed by the big agri-corporations.
Fourth - they will eliminate programs that help Americans (middle class and poor) and replace them with saving-accounts that they will have to pay into.
Fifth - they will remove protections against predatory financing etc., consumer protections so that we have to fend for ourselves.
Sixth - I dont think that they can eliminate Social Security and Medicare for existing people on these programs, but will phase out benefits for those not currently on these programs. I believe that they will also change the program where people will get 50% in defined benefits and 50% in contributory benefits.
Seventh - They will eliminate protections for Labor rights, Unions.
Eighth - they will take away the guns!!!
Ninth - MAGA will love it, cause they are screwing over POC and Women, not recognizing that they will suffer more.
Possibly for us - theyll give us a steady diet of conflicts, propaganda and misinformation to further confuse us into who our real adversaries are and who are our friends (Pro-Putin stuff).
And then, they will start to do the crazy stuff. Trump wont be in the mix at some point, cause of health (or impeachment) but his VP will make this all sound good.
Neighbors will turn against neighbors, friends against friends, Christians against non-Christians, Educated/Elites against the stupids. Gotta remember that there are more stupids than smart.
Think Im going to go take a nap.
Oh, I forgot - at some point our money has diminishing value, maybe the beginning of Argentina inflation - and a push for moving the American funds into some type of Trump-BitCoin.
Party over

(18,275 posts)It was about something more than one man's ginormous ego/personality disorder.
More like Mussolini or Hitler then?
Because Domestically he could re-ignite the Civil War to some degree, as some might say that he already has.
But International Politics could kill us all. I noticed the Europe is preparing for his second term - and it appears that they are not going to kiss his ass as they did the first term.
Mexico and Canada - are not going to kiss his ass.
He may try to align the US with Russia - but that dog really wont hunt.
So, all he can do is give the nation to the Oligarchs. Musk and a few others wants the US to be like South Africa in their hey-day of Apartheid. All Trump wants is to stay out of jail, have people kiss his add and say nice things about him, and if he is lucky he will get to screw Ivanka.
That is a good point, although the Confederacy did try to align with Great Britain.

(13,017 posts)That's what I see happening. I forget who delineated these stages after studying empires of the past, but IIRC the final stage is decadence, of which one of the early, somewhat anodyne hallmarks is the promotion of chefs to celebrity status. We need to watch out for that.
