Immigrants and allies at U.S. Capitol urge Biden to act before Trump deportations beginBy: Shauneen Miranda - December 17, 2024 3:44 pm
WASHINGTON In the crucial last month before President Joe Biden leaves office, immigrants and allies on Tuesday urged the president to offer protections for immigrant communities before Donald Trump is inaugurated.
The president-elect has promised the largest deportation in U.S. history, stoking fear and uncertainty among undocumented immigrants and immigration advocates over a sweeping platform that marked the core of Trumps GOP presidential campaign.

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib also voiced her concerns Tuesday over the president-elects immigration plans.
We cannot underestimate, as you all know, what will unfold the moment Trump takes office in January, and we need as many people as possible working to resist this hateful agenda, the Michigan Democrat said.

At a Michigan rally, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a vocal critic of the Biden-Harris administration's support for Israel in the Gaza war, spoke against Trump but stopped short of endorsing Harris. Her stance has drawn mixed reactions within the party as Election Day approaches
It's too late, and I'm too tired. In Spring of 2018 I helped organize and spoke at a major rally in my county in opposition to child separation. I went to the Newark Airport. I engaged several attorneys I know to do pro bono work to help those seeking asylum.
Half of those who voted - voted for President Elect Leon. About 90 million eligible did not vote.
I'm one woman with a small stage. Rashida had a HUGE stage. She could have offered full throated support for Harris but her ego got in the way.
I'm glad she's putting in the effort - but its going nowhere.
I did my part. It's time for the non voters to do something. They can organize and fight - I'm resting.

And now she thinks there's an executive order that would magically prevent Trump from doing what he told us for a year he was planning to do? Sounds like the group either doesn't know how executive orders work or they're setting up another "blame Biden" narrative.
Put the blame where it lies: with Trump voters, with third party voters, with "Abandon Harris" assholes, with the lazy stay-at-homes, and with anyone who gave them outright or implicit permission to not show up by badmouthing the Democratic Party.
"Opposing Trump" was not enough, and unfortunately, we will ALL soon be entering the the "find out" portion of the program. They need to take responsibility and apologize.

smart, capable younger people to support and mentor in order to prepare them to be tomorrow's leaders when today's leaders are gone? Today's leaders are not immortal.
Did you think that Barack Obama was too young when he ran for president in 2008? I heard several people say that. Of course they really meant that he was too Black. Ted Kennedy did not think that Obama was too young to endorse and support.
Is there any value in blocking capable people from advancing so that they can gain the additional experience that will improve their wisdom and leadership abilities for when today's leaders are gone?
I do not count Rashid among the people that I would support, regardless of age, because of her political views and actions.
I could support AOC because she has demonstrated an intelligent grasp of issues, skill in questioning and challenging people during hearings, courage in facing down opponents in Congress, and commitment to the values of democracy. She went into Congress with what I thought was some arrogance about running things without any experience. But she has since demonstrated an ability to listen, watch, learn, and develop awareness of procedures and the need to grow and learn.
Experience and wisdom gathered over many years of living have made President Biden the best president of my lifetime, so I have supported him. But even he started out as a green Congressman who rose through the ranks. I supported Hillary Clinton because of her experience, knowledge, and skills accumulated over many years of public service.
OTOH, age and experience have not given McConnell an ounce of wisdom.
If our republic survives the fascist oligarchs, who will be our leaders in 10 or 20 years? I might be around in 10 years, but I'm sure I won't still be here in 20 years. Neither will Pelosi, Biden, or Bill and Hillary. Jeffries will likely still be alive and still in government, I hope. So will AOC and Jasmine Crockett. I'm betting that David Hogg will be in Congress in 20 years. Jamie Raskin will be 82 in 20 years, probably still sharp as ever and I hope physically healthy, but perhaps ready to retire.
It is the natural order of things that younger people must rise through the ranks in order to gain the knowledge and experience that they will need when it is time for them to take over. After this year's election results, we might be able to use some fresh ideas and perspectives added to the mix of older, experienced leaders.

Within the Democratic Caucus, the Democrats on the committee are responsible for electing vice chairs when in the majority and vice ranking members when in the minority. As with most other elected positions with the caucus, when there is more than one candidate for the position, the vote is held by secret ballot unless waived.
To be eligible to serve in this role, a Member must have been on the committee for less than five terms and may only hold the position for one term.
These restrictions reflect the caucuss intent that the positions serve as an opportunity for a junior Member to gain insight and experience into the workings of the committee.

Before anyone bashes me, yes, I absolutely 100% agree that Biden should do all he can to "offer protections for immigrant communities before Donald Trump is inaugurated.
(I won't be responding to any replies about any topics that are completely unrelated to this call for immigrant protections)
