"When your son goes MAGA"

That's the title of an article in today's NYT. I don't have a link to the article but it's worth reading. Maybe someone can post a link?
So you can go on hating the paper if you want. I think it's still one of the best ones around and will continue supporting it.

Mr. Trump has for nearly a decade been a source of political divides within families, cleaving new fault lines along the way. In 2016, as younger voters leaned toward Hillary Clinton over Mr. Trump, it was easy to find left-leaning children loudly bemoaning the politics of their Trump-supporting parents, online and in the news.

This time around, there is a fresh wrinkle. Although young voters as a whole preferred Ms. Harris, Mr. Trump secured a second term in office with the help of an improved performance among young men. That has in some families exposed a different dynamic: liberal parents contending with their conservative sons.

(snip)

Some liberal parents aren’t so sure they should try to intervene. Plenty see their sons’ embrace of Mr. Trump as an expected act of rebellion, or a choice made by an independent young adult that they should respect. For others, it has felt like a painful rejection of the values they have tried to instill in their children.

“I’ve had to do a lot of soul searching and reading about it to not feel like I’ve failed as a mom,” said Ms. Behr, who adopted Eli from China when he was 10 months old. In tearful therapy sessions, she has come to believe that pressuring her son to share her views was only making him more deeply entrenched.

My best friend in middle/early high-school was full Chippewa adopted by very white parents who already had a biological son. To say it screwed her up is an understatement. The fact she was adopted was there every second of every day for all the world to see. That this young man searched for a tribe where he felt he belonged isn’t the least bit surprising.

I am guilty of shutting down when my MAGA family calls human beings illegal aliens among other things. These are ALL church going folks from different faiths.

I often ask them how they reconcile their religious beliefs with their political beliefs?

Crickets.

Sometimes it is really hard to look in my adult stepchildren’s faces and know they fully support fascists.

Sometimes it is really hard to look in my adult grandson’s faces and see their racism and misogyny.

Sometimes it is really hard to see their white privilege on display.

They believe the world lives like them. My stepchildren have lived in the Third World. Not a single adult on either side has ever been outside the States except for Cabo.🙄

I don’t like the article’s ending blaming Democrats for censoring their opponents. Expecting people to be respectful of others is not censorship.

Trump tapped “BIGLY” into male privilege and resentment. Many men, even younger men, resent women getting ahead of them in life. To them it’s a zero-sum belief. “Women only get ahead at a man’s expense.”

I used to hear older men at work tell me I was taking a job away from a man who had a family to support.

Many women today do not want to have motherhood and housework as their only option in life. Apparently even younger men resent this notion. Hence Shady Vance and his “crazy cat ladies” comments.

More women than men are going to college. Men resent women bosses or women as CEOs. That should be my place, many of them think.

Women want control over their lives and their bodies. For far too long, we have not had that and still don’t completely have it.

It upsets me to no end that many of these guys overlook rape, abuse, bullying, etc. I guess they think that those behaviors, even though they know are wrong, often come along with men acting manly.

I feel lucky that my three adult sons don’t buy into that horse manure. It must be heartbreaking as a mom to see your son go over to the dark side like that. I have no answer for it.
